High Altitude, High Achievement

I'm a lifelong learner who enjoys sharing my passion for learning with others. I enjoy teaching and I'm patient with students. I focus on coaching students on the learning process as well as the content. I believe that every student is unique and work with each to find approaches to learning, studying and academic success that are attuned to their individuality. I attended a private college prep high school. I took 7 AP courses in high school and work with students taking AP classes. I ... [more]

Algebra 1

Algebra is the on-ramp to college and the professions, and it is a subject that I began teaching in the middle of Spring Semester 2012 and will continue teaching. Robert Moses calls math and algebra the ticket to 21st century citizenship, and I would agree. It is the foundation upon which all other secondary and college math and science success will be built, so it is of strategic importance to every student. I focus on working with students to understand the "why" not just the "how", so the "how" will stick. My goal is to help students master the subject so that it is a source of strength for their academic and professional career, not a weakness that hinders their future.

Calculus

I can help you understand Calculus and even learn to enjoy it. Whether you're in College and taking Calculus or High School taking AP Calculus AB or BC, I can get you from the point of struggling to being ahead of the class, comfortable with the class and your abilities, and, in the case of AP Calculus, prepared for the test.

Reading

I have just completed a graduate school course in teaching reading. As a result of the course I have developed a strategy to help students of all ages build their ability to read and write in English. While our brains are genetically wired to learn to speak languages, reading and writing must be taught, as there is no genetic wiring for reading or writing. English is one of the most difficult languages to learn how to read and write for a few reasons: 1) the English vocabulary is much larger than most other languages. Researchers at Harvard and Google just calculated the English language at 1,022,000 words and growing by about 8,500 words per year, 2) English spelling is a mess, with more than 1,100 spelling rules (compare that to Spanish's 46). These challenges don't arise when listening and speaking a language but arise when reading and writing. My strategy for improving English reading capabilities takes into account these challenges as well as each student's specific background, strengths, weaknesses, and goals. The solution harnesses modern technologies to address the challenges, taking into account strengths and weaknesses, and achieving goals in a novel and engaging way.

Trigonometry

It's amazing to me that there is so much math related to the simple, humble triangle, but there is! The key to success in Trig is to realize that you need to think in "layers" (as many as 5 or 6 layers), and each layer must be mastered. Mastery comes from a solid understanding matched with lots of practice. If you take the right approach you can do well in Trig. It also helps to start a month or two before your Trig class starts to gain momentum in mastering the layers.

Writing

I currently have three books published on Amazon ("5 Big Ideas that will Change Your Life", "What is Love? A How-to Guide", and "5 Big Ideas for Cradle Catholics") which are also available as free PDF downloads. These provide a sample of my writing style. I also have more than ten years experience writing Business Proposals as a Consultant and Sales Person and in college I worked on both the newspaper and the yearbook.

Statistics

Over the past five years as a tutor I've worked with students developing an understanding of Statistics in a variety of areas (business, the health sciences, etc.) and at a variety of levels (high school, college, business). Statistics can be fun and interesting as it helps us better understand life and can help us make better decisions.

GMAT

I scored 720 on the GMAT after being away from school for 20 years and have developed a specific approach to preparation which can help you increase your GMAT score. While the approach is the same for each individual, I tune it based on the requirements of each student for maximum impact. We will use test materials developed by the people who design the actual test you will take.

ASVAB

If you would like to get into the military but struggle with the ASVAB or believe it may be a hurdle to military entrance I can help you. If you're shooting for eligibility of a specific career I can also help.

ACT Reading

ACT English

I can help you increase your ACT score by understanding how the designers of the test think and what they expect. You will take practice tests developed by the people who develop the actual test (and take the practice test on your time). When we meet we will only review your incorrect responses and help you understand what to do the next time to pick the correct response.

Elementary Math

I can help students struggling with Singapore Math understand how to build models to solve problems. I can help students increase their "Mental Math" capability that will enable them to do more math, more quickly, and more reliably. I can administer a diagnostic test that helps me identify a particular student's math strengths, weaknesses, and gaps. I then develop a custom plan to fill in the gaps and shoring up the weaknesses. I can provide challenge to elementary (and high school) students that are not being challenged, introducing them to Calculus, Statistics, Probability, etc. in a way that they can understand given their current understanding of math.

Managerial Accounting

I have an MBA and have worked with students taking Managerial Accounting courses. It helps to view Managerial Accounting as a form of Accounting that supports businesses making better decisions. The subject is broad, so "calibrating" to your Professor is critical to your success in any Managerial Accounting course. I can help you understand Managerial Accounting and "calibrate" to your Professor.

Financial Accounting

I can help you develop your understanding of Accounting. I've taken two Accounting courses in college and one in grad school. I've worked with students taking Managerial Accounting courses, Finance courses with Accounting aspects to them, and Introductory Accounting.

Study Skills

Developing good study skills become increasingly important as students progress through school. I help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and work with them to develop a plan for learning that fits their individual traits. I also teach students specific approaches that are used by the best students to 1) increase memorization capability, 2) focus on what is important, and 3) increase their proficiency in taking standardized tests.

Business

I have a Master's in Business Administration (MBA) from University of Colorado-Boulder, Colorado's flagship university. I have started more than one business, at least one of which is successful, and consulted a number of Fortune 500 business as a management consultant.

MCAT

I worked with a student to develop her Chemistry and Physics understanding, enabling her to increase her MCAT score from approximately the 50th to approximately the 70th percentile (score of 500 to 505).

College Counseling

I have helped a number of students apply for college, from college selection, application development, and essay writing. I have experience with the Common Application as well as specific applications for some colleges.

Biostatistics

I have tutored many students in Statistics. Some of those students have been in the biosciences field, so by necessity I have tutored students on the application of statistics to the biosciences; that is, biostatistics.

Praxis

I recently passed the PRAXIS math test for Secondary School Math Teachers (High School and Middle School) at the score required to pass in the State of Colorado, which is the highest score requirement of any state. I used the same standardized test strategies, techniques and approaches to pass this test in the first attempt that I use with students.

AFOQT

I have previously assisted two students in preparing for the AFOQT (Air Force Officer Qualifying Test). I am familiar with the unique components of this test, including the more advanced math topics that are tested as well as the concepts that are tested that are relevant to pilots.
