After starting out as an engineer, I now have 16 years of experience as a math, physics and electronics teacher and 7 years experience as a tutor. Here are five reasons that You might like to have me tutor you or your children. (1) First of all, I know the material very well and this helps me to simplify it for the student and make it easier to learn. I am also very aware of how to apply math and physics to everyday life. (2) I make the tutoring process interesting and pleasant and I a... [more]

Algebra 1

I have taught various levels of math at a middle high school and at 4 different colleges for more than twelve years and I have tutored math for five years. I have experience teaching and tutoring everything from pre-algebra to calculus and differential equations. I am familiar with what courses an Algebra 1 student typically has already taken and what he needs to learn in order to be ready for his next course. I emphasize teaching students how to work problems. This approach is easier for them to grasp than a more traditional lecture style approach. It is also more interesting for the students. I am good at working with students who are failing and with students who want to get straight A's. I get along well with most students and can make learning interesting. I am very patient and encouraging. I have found in my teaching that most students have not been taught good study habits or test taking skills. Therefore I give my students very specific and useful advice on how to study, and take tests. I also help them develop good problem solving skills. This advice helps my students to learn more easily and do better in their courses.

Algebra 2

I have taught the equivalent of high school Algebra 2 at 3 different colleges for more than ten years and I have tutored high school Algebra 2 for four years. I also have experience teaching and tutoring all levels of algebra from from pre-algebra to pre-calculus and college algebra. I am familiar with what courses an Algebra 2 student typically has already taken and what he needs to learn in order to be ready for his next course. I get along well with most students and can make learning interesting. I am very patient and encouraging.

Calculus

Calculus is somewhat different from algebra, but when presented properly it is not that hard to learn. I have a PhD in Physics and so I have a lot of experience using calculus to solve physics problems. I have a good background for teaching both calculus theory and applied calculus. I emphasize teaching students how to work problems. This approach is easier for them to grasp than a more traditional lecture style approach. It is also more interesting for the students. Geometry

I have a PhD in Physics from Harvard and I have taught various levels of math since 1999 and I have tutored math since 2002. I taught high school geometry for one year. I have also used a lot of geometry principles as I studied for my Physics Phd degree. And I have also used many geometry principles as I taught college level physics and electronics and calculus (for 6 years at ITT Tech). I have been tutoring geometry students for the last 5 years at Wyzant - check out my references.

Physics

I have a PhD in Physics and I have taught and tutored college math and physics at three different colleges for 8 years. I am sure that I can help you/your child to do well in your/their physics class.

Prealgebra

I have a PhD in Physics from Harvard - so I learned a lot of math in school and I know Prealgebra and Algebra very well. I have taught various levels of math at 5 different colleges since 1999. In particular I taught prealgebra at Epping Middle High school (for 1 year in 1999) and at ITT Tech (for 8 years starting in 2000). More recently I have been tutoring prealgebra at Wyzant since 2011 - check out my recommendations.

Precalculus

I have a PhD in Physics from Harvard - so I know Algebra Precalculus and Calculus very well. I have taught various levels of math at 5 different colleges since 1999. In particular I taught algebra, PRECALCULUS (advanced algebra) and calculus at ITT Tech for 7 years starting in 2001. More recently I have been tutoring these courses at Wyzant since 2011 - check out my recommendations.

Trigonometry

I am familiar with what courses a student typically has already taken and what he needs to know for his next course. Trigonometry has many common sense examples that can be used to make it easier to understand. I can help the student who is failing and the student who wants to get straight A's. I get along well with most students and can make learning interesting. I am very patient and encouraging. I also help students learn better study habits and test taking techniques.

SAT Math

I have done both SAT and FCAT tutoring. For all of these tests, we need to work through a workbook that has sample problems. A SAT workbook can be purchased at a bookstore. I recommend the Kaplan book. In order to do well on the test, it is important to master the material in the sample tests. This may take a longer or shorter time -- depending on the students background and ability. If the student needs a lot of preparation, you may want to tutor more than once a week.

GED

I have helped many students study for standardized tests and the GED test in particular. I have had good success in helping students learn the material and pass the tests. I help students to learn good study and test taking techniques which is very important. And I help students develop problem solving techniques that are important for math and physics problems.

ACT Math

I have done both SAT and FCAT tutoring -- which are similar to the ACT test. For all of these tests, we need to work through a workbook that has sample problems. I recommend the Kaplan test prep book for the SAT test and the Cliff Notes Test Prep Book for the ACT test. These can be purchased at a bookstore or at Amazon. In order to do well on the test, it is important to master the material in the sample tests. This may take a longer or shorter time -- depending on the student's background and ability. Differential Equations

I have a PhD in physics which involves solving many different kinds of differential equations. I have also taught an undergraduate course in differential equations and taken several applied math courses that deal with differential equations. I also work with students to teach them better study habits and test taking techniques.
