Phonics
I truly enjoy teaching students to read. As a Level I certified Wilson instructor, I appreciate the importance of a strong foundation in phonics and phonemic awareness. I ensure that my students are firm in their ability to blend sounds. A child's confidence expands tremendously when he/she is able to decode words automatically and proficiently.
Study Skills
I am adept at teaching elementary-aged students in test-taking strategies. I've worked with students on learning keywords to look for, to carefully read questions, and to eliminate improbable answers.
Special Needs
I have taught students with various disabilities in my career. I have taught in cross-categorical classes. I have been fortunate in my experiences with students with autism, learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, intellectual disabilities, vision and hearing impairments. Additionally, I worked as a speech therapist for 7 years.
ADHD
Students with attention disorders require consistency, attending skills training and appropriate accommodations to optimize focus, motivation and performance. I have worked with numerous students with attention deficits and understand their needs for special supports.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
I currently teach a self-contained class for students with autism. I have worked with students with autism for 7 years. I have utilized best practices and researched -based methods with my students.
Dyslexia
I have worked with students with letter reversals, transpositions, etc. I have been successful in assisting students to compensate using a variety of methods, strategies and mnemonics.
