Currently, I have several Algebra I students. Math is a state of mind. If a student has basic skills under their belt, Algebra is a natural progression. If they need basic skills, I am here to help! I also have a few tricks up my sleeve to assist with study skills and cognitive training. Algebra requires thinking skills, and I can teach your student how to think. Whether your child needs remedial help or just homework help, I am here to help.
As a special education teacher in Chesterfield County, I received training in the Herman Method for reversing reading failure. This is an Orton-Gillingham method. After this I obtained training in Writing Road to Reading and the Blue Book Method. I have used these methods for private tutoring as well as group reading sessions. In the past several years, I have worked as a reading specialist at Hallmark Youthcare.
Writing has always been a love of mine. I am trained in the Institute of Excellence in Writing programs. This has proven to be a success with many of my students. I can make writing less subjective and more objective for the student.
English, including reading, writing and grammar are my loves. I have taught independent classes in English from elementary through high school. I have also taught English in private schools and in tutoring sessions.
For many years I have taught study skills and writing. I have had numerous courses on writing and the teaching of writing. I use materials from The Institute of Excellence in Writing (IEW). I also have had success in raising the scores of students taking standardized tests. Students have returned to me over the years and thanked me for giving them a proven method for writing.
For many years, I have assisted students with math challenges. Most often the student needs confidence building as well as a reinforcement of basic skills. I believe math should be fun. I'll employ a number of different methods and games to help your child succeed at math.
