Students will learn to define matter and classify it according to chemical and physical properties. They will trace the historical development of the modern atomic theory and explain the current quantum mechanical model of the atom. The periodic table will be defined and explained using the modern atomic theory. The properties of atoms will be explored. Using the understanding of bonding and periodic properties, students will predict and define the various types of bonding between elements. Students will name and write correct sample formulas for compounds. Students will describe a chemical reaction with an equation and calculate relationships described by the equation. In addition, the mole concept will be utilized. Based on the kinetic theory students will differentiate between the physical properties of the three phases of matter. Students will calculate mathematical relationships based on gas behavior. Quantitatively and qualitatively, the student will describe the process of solutions and characteristics of solutions. Thermodynamic relationships will be investigated. Students will explore the factors that affect the rates of a reaction and apply them to the theory of dynamic equilibrium. They will predict changes in equilibrium based on LeChatelier?s principle, and apply them to 2 acid-base theory. Oxidation-reduction will be applied to real-life situations and energy interactions will be used to explain reaction spontaneity.
Students will be introduced to the study of motion, forces, momentum, work, power, and energy. Energy in transition will be studied through the concept of waves. We will explore light and sound phenomenon, and electricity and magnetism. A study of modern physics will be included.
This course is designed to allow students the opportunity to investigate the composition of matter and its interactions. This includes basic properties of matter, the atomic theory, bonding, nomenclature, chemical reactions, solutions, basic acid /base theory, and the study of the periodic tendencies of the elements. Students will also investigate, discover and learn the properties of forces, motion, work & power, energy, heat and temperature, electricity, magnetism, sound and light.
