Funny, Creative, Patient NYU MFA for English,Test Prep, and French

I'm a warm and friendly tutor who wants to make the learning experience as interesting, engaging, and fun as possible. I am committed to finding the learning style that works best for each individual student. I graduated from the University of Colorado in 2001 with a BA in English literature, obtained an MFA in creative writing from NYU, and have worked as a writer, adjunct professor, and textbook editor. Now at 37 I have made a career shift to nursing. I believe that we learn our whole li... [more]

I grew up in a family of readers (my parents were both New Yorker editors) and I have an MFA in Creative Writing from NYU. I believe that reading should be as enjoyable an experience as possible. My seven-year-old had some difficulty learning to read, and one strategy that I found effective was finding books that he really wanted to read. I have worked as a preschool teacher with early readers and pre-literate children, and as a children's textbook editor. I am eager to help find a strategy that works for each individual child, and help them explore the wonderful world of children's literature, from Dr Seuss to Roald Dahl to C.S. Lewis.

SAT Reading

I have a MFA in Creative Writing and have worked both as a teacher and as a textbook editor. I received (although at 32, this was quite a few years ago :) an 800 on my Verbal SAT. I am skilled at making learning fun, and teaching the test-taking skills that help students excel on the SAT. I believe that the SAT is in no way a test that measures intelligence ; rather it focuses on test-taking skills. I am committed to helping each student hone his or her test-taking skills.

ACT English

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a 7-year-old son and have worked as a first-grade teacher, a preschool teacher, and a children's textbook editor, so I am quite experienced in the elementary education field. I also received an MFA in creative writing from NYU, so I am both familiar with and have a love for the written word. My passion is for teaching language arts, and I love making reading and writing fun for my students.

I am a graduate of NYU's MFA program and have a seven-year-old son who had some difficulty in learning to read. I am very comfortable with the written word at any level, any my experiences helping my son improve his reading and writing skills helped me hone my skills as a reading, writing, English, and phonics tutor. I have worked as a preschool teacher, as well, helping children with early reading and prereading skills.
