Former Teacher with PhD in Math Education

I recently completed a doctorate in Mathematics Education at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. I work in designing math tests for end-of-grade exams in grades 3-12, so I am very familiar with content standards and how students are assessed. I have a master's degree in Secondary Mathematics Education from American University in Washington, DC and am a fully credentialed teacher. I taught 8th grade Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Geometry for two years and have over nine years of tutor... [more]

Algebra 1

Algebra is one of my favorite topics to tutor because it is the subject I taught as a full-time teacher. I focus on making Algebra meaningful to students by using real-world examples applicable to students' lives, and I emphasize conceptual understanding over memorization. This teaching philosophy results in long-term retention of concepts that prepares students for more advanced math.

Geometry

Geometry builds a foundation of proofs and logic that students will apply to more advanced math. I previously taught Geometry as a full-time teacher and have deep content knowledge that allows me to jump right in to whatever material a student is learning that week, while focusing on building skills in proofs and logical reasoning.

Prealgebra

Algebra/Pre-Algebra is one of my favorite topics to tutor because it is the subject I taught as a full-time teacher. I focus on making Algebra meaningful to students by using real-world examples applicable to students' lives, and I emphasize conceptual understanding over memorization. This teaching philosophy results in long-term retention of concepts that prepares students for more advanced math.

ACT Math

I have over a decade of experience providing tutoring in math test prep for the SAT and ACT, helping students raise their scores to meet their college admission goals. My full-time job is in test development and analysis of test scores from educational testing, so I have an in-depth understanding of the content on math tests and strategies to score the highest. I scored a perfect 800 on the quantitative section of the GRE -- this illustrates a deep conceptual understanding which I am able to transfer to students.
