Excellent English is Important!

Hi, I've taught both high school and college English in Michigan and in South Carolina. In addition, I have tutored extensively (mostly English and lit, but I am also certified in social studies and humanities). For thirteen years, I have had a college consulting business. I am well traveled and speak several languages. Looking forward to meeting you and helping you be a better and happier student!... [more]

I have taught middle school study skills in summer school classes, as well as secondary and college English. The curriculum included many helpful hints and procedures for study in middle school, high school and the future. Additional qualification for tutoring study skills is my secondary teaching certification in several varied areas (English, social studies and humanities, for three) and my years of tutoring middle school and high school students.

Study Skills

I have taught middle school study skills in summer school classes. The curriculum included many helpful hints and procedures for study in middle school, high school and the future. Additional qualification for tutoring study skills is my secondary teaching certification in several varied areas (English, social studies and humanities, for three) and my years of tutoring middle school and high school students.

Theater

I have a BA in theatre and have worked in several theatres - the well known repertory company Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, CT, the Antioch Area Theatre in OH and Heartlande Theatre in MI. In addition to acting, I have directed and written 2 plays, one produced in 40 Plays by Michigan Playwrights Under 10 Minutes Long. I have also directed and cast school productions, and cast a short film.

College Counseling

I have had a highly successful college counseling business for 14 years. I help students determine which colleges to apply to and to do their essays and applications. All of my students are accepted to college, many to their first choice school. I also work with students applying to grad and professional schools. My fees for The Admission Advantage, the name of my business, are higher than everyday tutoring.

Speech

I have taught speech in both high school and adult education, and feel that public speaking is crucial for young people in their daily lives. My undergraduate degree is in theatre and I have acted and judged and coached high school forensics. When I formed the first forensics team at a high school in SC, my students received the first public recognition they had ever had!

Social Studies

I have Michigan secondary professional certification in social studies and all of its concomitant areas, from government to politics around the globe. I also have the same certification in South Carolina. Although I have not taught much in this area, I remain certified in it and studied it in school.

Film

My undergraduate degree in theatre and PhD work in English included study of film. I currently belong to a film group, Metro Film Lovers, and am the "movie picker" for the year, the person who determines which films 50-odd members will view and analyze monthly. I am also one of the group film facilitators. I have also been in a few films.
