Love Tutoring; Love Helping Others

Teaching runs in my family. Both of my parents, and most of my siblings have taught in public school or private school at one time or another. Learning is one of the key aspects of a fulfilling life, and my love of learning makes tutoring a natural for me. I feel deeply rewarded after virtually every tutoring lesson because I enjoy helping people truly understand a topic. I graduated from Boston University with a Computer Science degree in ?99. I?m self-employed now, but even when I ... [more]

Algebra 1

I love algebra. It's the basis of all higher-level mathematics, and I love helping students develop the same passion for algebra that I have. I can teach students the equivalent of a full year of a rigorous algebra high school curriculum, making sure you master all of the skills needed to succeed in this crucial subject. Our tutoring sessions can help you get a higher grade in school as well as a strong foundation to score well on the mathematics sections of the SAT and/or ACT College Admissions Tests. I can help lead you to mastery of the following topics: ?Equations and Functions ?Real Numbers ?Equations of Lines ?Graphs of Equations and Functions ?Writing Linear Equations ?Graphing Linear Inequalities ?Solving Systems of Equations ?Exponential Functions ?Factoring Polynomials ?Quadratic Equations and Quadratic Functions ?Rational Equations and Functions

Types of numbers o Integers o Fractions o Decimals o Negative numbers ? Operational properties o Commutative properties o Associative properties o Distributive properties ? Constants and variables ? Basic equations ? Use of parentheses ? Order of evaluation of formulas ? Exponentiation o Ratios o Logarithms o Scientific Notation o Significant Figures o Simplifying Radicals

Reading

I've been teaching students to read for more than 15 years. I've provided remediation for high school students who required supplementary reading instruction. When a student has poor word attack skills or trouble with reading comprehension, it affects all academic areas, but especially English, Social Studies or History, Science, Foreign Languages, and even mathematics. Many of the errors I see on the mathematics sections of standardized tests can be attributed to faulty reading. Students might misunderstand what the word problem is asking, misread test instructions, or be unable to discern the main idea of the passages in the critical reading section. I help my students become very skilled at identifying and rephrasing (restating in their own words) the main idea of the passages we read. Depending on the student?s level, we proceed sequentially through the following skills: ?Letter formation ?Phonics ?Sight words ?Reading comprehension (main idea, following directions, drawing inferences, close reading for details, varying reading rate according to the type of material being read, critical thinking abilities, drawing conclusions, ?) A reading specialist can help your student overcome word attack and comprehension problems. Feel free to contact me for further details.

Writing

I have taught writing to younger students, adults, and people for whom English is not their native language. I have written features for a magazine, and have edited and proofread many essays, magazine articles, and books. I?m an aspiring author myself, so writing skills are something which come naturally to me and which I have a lot of experience in.

Proofreading

I am a born proofreader; I actually enjoy the process. If you are looking for a meticulous, fastidious proofreader, I?m the one. If you are an author who wants an extra set of eyes to proofread your content, just contact me. If you are a student whose eyes have glazed over after reading and rereading your paper for the past few days, and you can?t stand to look at it any more, call me. If English is your second language, and you don?t feel confident expressing yourself in standard written English, contact me. I?ll help your writing read as smoothly as that of a native speaker of American English. In short, whatever your proofreading requirements are, I am sure I can help you.

GED

The GED is a computer-based exam that is comprised of four sections: Reasoning Through Language Arts; Mathematical Reasoning; Social Studies; and Science. This test is designed to measure the skills and concepts a student is expected to master during his or her years in high school. I have been helping students pass standardized tests like the GED for 15 years, and I can help you, too!
