A Love Of Learning And A Passion For Sharing Knowledge

I am a professional computer nerd who is a network engineer/network team lead by day. At night, and during my free time, I take great pleasure in helping others achieve their learning and educational goals. There is no greater feeling of fulfillment than seeing the ?light bulb turn on? for a student on a given topic. I am a native Albuquerquean, a graduate of St. Pius X High School, and a graduate of the University of New Mexico (WOOF, WOOF , WOOF). My undergraduate degree is in Computer Eng... [more]

Algebra 1

Algebra is a subject that has confused and confounded students since it's inception. However, like other areas in math, once the basic building blocks of Algebra have been established, new topics become exponentially more manageable and even enjoyable to learn. I have tutored Algebra (all levels) for the last 14 years. It is without a doubt my favorite subject to tutor. As with other topics, I first like to perform a grade based assessment to determine a student's current strengths and weaknesses in Algebra. I will then develop lessons to keep the strengths sharp and shore up the weaknesses. This will include a combination of good old fashioned pen and paper work via one on one sessions, as well as integration of computer technology and demonstrations into the learning experience.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is the point in a student's (or young mathematician's) career that bridges the gap between the basic arithmetic of elementary math and moves into more advanced topics such as order of operations, exponents, algebraic equations, etc. It is not uncommon for students to initially struggle in this area. I myself struggled in this area as a young student (a loooong time ago). However, thanks to a great teacher who lit a fire for math inside of me that continues to burn until this day I was able to master these topics and continue down a road of success in Math. My goal is to help light that same fire for you and/or your student. I have tutored Algebra (all levels) for the last 14 years. It is without a doubt my favorite subject to tutor. As with other topics, I first like to perform a grade based assessment to determine a student's current strengths and weaknesses in the areas covered by Prealgebra. I will then develop lessons to keep the strengths sharp and shore up the weaknesses. This will include a combination of good old fashioned pen and paper work via one on one sessions, as well as integration of computer technology and demonstrations into the learning experience.

Java

I have bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from the University of New Mexico and Master's degree in Business Administration with Management of Information Systems and Information Assurance concentrations. I have been programming for 17 years and continue to do in my regular job as Professional Services Engineer for Skybox Security, which is a company that specializes in Computer Networking and Security. I have tutored several Java students in the past and I am also an adjunct faculty member at Central New Mexico Community College and I use a variety of teaching methods including lecture, collaborative learning, individualized instruction, and various forms of technology based/supported instruction to teach hybrid (web and in-class lecture) Introduction to Computer Programming courses. I use this knowledge and apply it directly to all of my tutoring students to help them further their programming knowledge and expertise.

Elementary Math

As both a tutor and a father of 8 I have quite a bit of experience with the advanced nature of math in elementary schools today. Times sure have changed since we were young haven't they? Today's children are learning advanced topics far sooner than previous generations and in no subject is this more evident than in math. The good news is that building a strong foundation at this stage in learning can and will benefit a student into adulthood. When tutoring elementary age students in math I first like to perform a grade based assessment to determine the student's current strengths and weaknesses. Then I will use a combination of traditional teaching methods (concept introduction and lots of practice) and non-traditional teaching methods (think practical applications and games) to help a student master the various topics they will cover.

Networking (Computer)

I have been working in the Information Technology industry for 15 years, specializing in Network and Security Engineering. I currently hold a Cisco Certified Network Associate certification as well as a Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate Certification. I use my experience and practical knowledge to assist students studying computer networking to not only complete assignments and improve their grades, but also to gain a fuller and more fulfilling understanding of computer networking.
