Grammar lessons differ at each grade level and my expertise ranges from preschool to sixth grade. By developing good grammar skills at young ages, students can then go on to learn a second and third language with half the effort. I have always loved the grammar portion of our language and the little rules that stand behind our word choice and usage. It is quite simple to teach when you know the tricks, which I share with each of my students. :)
I review multiplication and division facts, fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions. Factoring fractions to lowest terms. finding least common multiple and least common denominator, finding and putting points on an XY grid, finding values for x in addition, subtraction problems. I also instruct converting fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions.
I love to read! In fact, teaching it is a true passion of mine. From preschool to fifth grade, I have made it one of my goals to learn as many ways to instruct it as possible in order to reach the many learning styles in my classes. The joy of reading is a learned skill, one that is acquired through the awesome techniques and strategies that I have mastered throughout my professional career. I have been teaching Spanish for the past 18 years and tutoring it for the past two. Much of my experience has been teaching Spanish to children in bilingual classes when I taught them math, reading, writing, and science in Spanish. During that time I also taught Spanish to the English speakers where we learned to speak, take notes, and sing in the Spanish. I also created and implemented Spanish curriculum that I taught to English speakers from grades 6-9 including grammar, reading, writing, math, and conversation at a magnet school for Math, Science, and Technology. At the end of each semester they gave presentations in Spanish and had to answer questions that I gave them; all in Spanish. The past two years for WyzAnt, I have tutored students in Spanish from grades K to College. I also teach the accent so those that learn it will sound just like a native speaker. I truly love the Spanish language and sharing it with others.
Isn't it amazing how the written word is more than just a five paragraph essay or a story about a given topic? We are in a new era where writing has become a form of self-expression and communication. I tutor my students on communicating about what they see, feel, or think about a picture, song, movie or text, then have them transfer it into their own words. I do this even for beginning writers. From my own experience, spelling counts!! Allow me the opportunity to demonstrate how I can open the door for your child to love to express himself/herself through the written word. You'll see amazing results in a relatively short amount of time. :)
I love teaching the English language. I concentrate on speaking, listening, grammar, spelling, writing, enunciation, proper usage, reading, reading comprehension, and fluency. I also work on developing phonemic awareness and articulation.
I will cover English conversation, reading comprehension, vocabulary development, grammar and proper usage and writing skills.
I use manipulatives and hands on materials to teach, instruct, and facilitate all elementary math subjects. Through these activities, your child will not only learn how to do a problem, but they will learn the reason or concept of the problem which will lead to a deeper knowledge of the task. I teach addition of single and multiple numbers with carry over, subtraction of single and multiple numbers with borrowing, multiplication facts, division, fractions, decimals, converting fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions, measurement, geometry, shapes and figures, and the concepts of pre-algebra.
I have acquired a Master's Degree in Education and worked as an elementary school teacher for 16 years at a magnet school for math, science, and technology. I have experience in all grade levels and can relate to any child of any age. It's my true gift.
I love phonics! I remember my first year in my teaching credential program that prophesied 'phonics' no longer worked. Well, to the contrary, I had one instructor that taught us 'phonics' anyway because she said that it was the ONLY reading program that did work and that many children in the 'Whole Language' years would grow up with reading difficulties. I believed in this teacher and began my own research into phonics. I learned that as a child, the end of the Baby Boomers, we were also not taught to read using phonics. That's why what she taught us was so foreign to me. When I worked as a teacher's aid and pulled out small groups away from the class, I taught them phonics. By mid-year she received an award for having the most fluent readers than the other teachers in the grade level. I believe it was due to the phonics instruction. To make a long story short, phonics did return with full force and test scores began to rise. Children learned to read with less difficulty and loved sharing their books with family and friends. It was a new era that has not ended. I don't think it ever will. Throughout my 16 year of teaching, I have used phonics. It is the only strategy for teaching reading that I know truly works. As the saying goes, "If it works, don't fix it."
I have always believed in the old saying of 'work before pleasure.' In order for a child to do well in school and have good study habits, there must be a scheduled routine, comparable to the child's physical, emotional, mental, and intellectual needs. Establishing a daily, or weekly routine with your child is the best bet. I just bought a white board calendar that hangs on our wall where everyone can see: homework time. Whether it's after school, before school, after sports, after dinner, etc. the time must be as consistent as possible. To expect a child to sit down and complete all of their homework at one time may be a set up for failure. Make sure the child has a snack and drink. The younger the child, say first or second grade, have them work no more than a half hour then a ten minute break followed by another half hour. The same goes for older children except the time spent doing the homework increases. For example, allow forty minutes for third graders followed by a ten minute break and fifty minutes for fourth and fifth graders followed by a ten minute break. During my last years of teaching, I taught a 4/5 Intensive Intervention class where I instructed 5-8 children directly from a special day class because my administrator understood my gift of working with those with special needs. One mother even came in and thanked me for helping her son enjoy and do better in school. He was a special needs student whose IEP indicated that he be put in a regular education classroom for only 1/4 of the day. Well, he, as well as six others with special needs came to my class that year. They all had IEP's. Two had fetal alcohol syndrome, two were mentally challenged, and two had Asperger's. Each left feeling good about the person they were and better yet, the person they had become in my class. I have also had one year of Autism training and I administered to children on the higher end of the Autistic Spectrum. For that year, I had the wonderful opportunity of sharing knowledge with preschoolers to those in middle school. I now know I can make a real difference in the lives of those with special needs: intellectually, mentally, and emotionally. There is so much more to a child than we ever realize. I believe I realized this with my very special kids.
During my 16 years of teaching, I have encountered many students each year with ADD or ADHD. One year I had six of 20 students with the disorder. My tolerance and patience level with the children with ADD/ADHD is extremely high as I learn what worked for each individual. Varied strategies worked differently with individual students. There had been many years that I worked with ADD/ADHD children where I had complete success with their learning goals; when the following years, teachers filed paperwork to send them to specialized schools for behavior problems or had them put into special day classes. You can imagine the deep seeded sadness and disbelief I felt when I had had such success with them in my classroom.

I have had one year of training and seven years of working on the behalf of autistic children. My experience includes Applied Behavioral Therapy, Child Abuse and Developmental Delays, Hippa Training Course, Strategies of ABA, Data Collecting, Suggestions for aggressive Behavior, Strategies for an Effective Session, Behavioral Implementer Course, Respite Provider Course, Behavior Instructor Basics Certification. I'm extremely qualified to teach handwriting because I taught third grade for seven years where handwriting was taught explicitly: one capital letter then its lowercase letter, next a capital letter with a lowercase, and finally three letter words followed by short sentences. The most important thing was to make sure that the letters were formed correctly. I would check each student write each letter to make sure they did this. I also taught first grade where I instructed the same procedure with the printed letters and words. Once again, it does matter how the letters are formed and how the pencil is held.
My experience with the Common Core curriculum includes teaching it with math and language arts for one year to first graders, two years to a 4-5 combo class of educational over-comers. and tutoring it for regular education students as well as autistic and learning challenged kiddos for the past 5 1/2 years, or 1600 hours of tutoring sessions. With time, it has become a challenging yet concrete way to establish patterns in math and is an in depth comprehensive approach to reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language skills.
