Patient and Knowledgeable Phi Beta Kappa Math and Science Tutor

Hi, my name is Mike, and I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and chemistry from Southern Methodist University, Dallas TX. I currently teach mathematics at a private, college preparatory high school. I have taught math and science at the middle school level as well. My primary focus is in tutoring students in pre-algebra through calculus and I enjoy working with students at all levels of education from elementary through college. Algebra 1

I have worked with both students who struggle with the subject and those who excel. I show students how to approach algebra as a problem solving process, as appropriate, to accelerate learning. By focusing on applications and problem solving I help students to see why Algebra is important. I utilize online learning tools to provide practice and assessment.

Algebra 2

Calculus

Calculus is where all the math you have learned in school comes together. Sometimes calculus texts can be hard to understand, so I use online tools to provide extra explanation, practice and assessment of skills through the course.

Chemistry

Chemistry is the study of matter and energy and the interactions between them. Chemistry tends to focus on the properties of substances and the interactions between different types of matter, particularly reactions that involve electrons. Understanding chemistry helps you to understand the world around you. Cooking is chemistry. Everything you can touch or taste or smell is a chemical. When you study chemistry, you come to understand a bit about how things work. It provides the explanation for how everyday things work. We will work together to help you understand the basics of chemistry and show how the processes work together.

Geometry

Geometry is my best subject. I am a former geometry teacher.

Precalculus

I have worked with both students who struggle with the subject and those who excel. I show students how to approach math as a problem solving process, as appropriate, to accelerate learning. Online learning tools are used as necessary to provide practice and assessment.

Trigonometry

I help students understand how to derive the various identities rather than memorize. Learning trig this way can help avoid fear of testing and/or forgetting the identities.

Elementary Math

Elementary math is the foundation for success in the upper grades. I work to make math fun and understandable and help prepare you for success.
