I have tutored and/or taught Algebra I for over 40 years. While majoring in math in college, I often helped fellow students who were struggling with math. The math courses I took in college included Calculus, Advanced Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Abstract Algebra. During my years as a graduate student at Duke University, I tutored undergraduates and students in the MBA program. I am certified in Secondary Math in the State of Texas and have taught Algebra I in the Irving ISD. Topics usually covered in Algebra I include number systems, properties of real numbers, order of operations (PEMDAS), prime numbers and factoring, exponents, simplifying expressions, solving equations and inequalities of one variable, properties of linear equations and inequalities, solving systems of linear equations and inequalities, introduction to quadratic equations and inequalities.

I have enjoyed chemistry since I was in elementary school and received a chemistry set for my birthday. When I was finally able to take chemistry in high school, I took to it like a duck to water. I excelled in A. P. Chemistry and placed out of first semester chemistry in college. Although my interests in math eventually won out over chemistry when I had to declare a major, I have never lost my interest in chemistry. I now study biochemistry and nutrition as one of my hobbies. In general, the topics covered in chemistry include, but are not limited to, the following: the history of chemistry, measurement and the metric system, the mole concept, chemical reactions and stoichiometry, energy and chemical reactions, states and properties of matter, the periodic table, chemical bonding, atomic and molecular structure, gas laws, concentrations of solutions, phase diagrams, intermolecular interactions, reaction kinetics, chemical equilibrium, modern acid-base theory, buffers, chemical thermodynamics, electrochemistry and nuclear chemistry. Topics may further include transition-metal chemistry, an introduction to organic chemistry and qualitative inorganic analysis.
Geometry was one of my favorite subjects in Junior High School. I had an awesome teacher who recognized my abilities and encouraged my explorations into the subject matter. I am certified in Secondary Math in the State of Texas and have taught Geometry in the Irving ISD. Topics usually covered in Geometry include points, lines, angles, properties of angle formed by parallel lines with intersecting lines, triangles, the Pythagorean theorem, quadrilaterals, polygons, solving equations and inequalities involving geometric figures, properties of irrational numbers.
I have taught Pre-Calculus as recently as the 2013-2014 school year. Since then I assisted several students with this subject and have several students with whom I will be working in the current school year. While majoring in math in college, I often helped fellow students who were struggling with math. During my years as a graduate student at Duke University, I tutored undergraduates and students in the MBA program in a variety of math courses including precalculus and the Calculus. I am certified and highly-qualified in Secondary Math in the State of Texas. Pre-Calculus is about the analysis of functions and their behavior. Topics usually covered include various properties of functions: domain and range, graphs, end behavior, piecewise and composite functions, factoring and finding the roots of higher order polynomials, exponential and logarithmic functions, rational expressions, conic sections, parametric functions, trigonometric functions, trigonometric identities, polar coordinates, powers and roots of complex numbers and vectors.
Having struggled with ADD in my own life as a student, I understand the difficulties many have in developing good study skills. Since my wife and I educated our children at home, we were able to spend considerable time helping our children develop good study skills. When I began teaching math in the Irving ISD I worked with my students to help them with their overall academic progress which included helping them to improve their study skills. In fact I am currently working with one of the students I tutor to help him become more organized in his study habits. Developing good study skills involves learning good time management; using a calendar to schedule appropriate time to study and complete lessons, such as term papers; learning which subjects require daily practice and completion of homework versus those which can be addressed in blocks of time; developing techniques to overcome learning challenges such as ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, etc.; and learning the importance of developing overall discipline in one's life.
Discrete mathematics is concerned with the relationships among mathematical structures that are discrete instead of continuous. For example, the arithmetic of integers would be a topic in discrete mathematics, whereas the arithmetic of all real numbers is in the realm of continuous mathematics. Broadly speaking, the topics in discrete mathematics include, but are not limited to, the following: logic, proofs, set theory, number theory, linear algebra, graph theory, probability, permutations and combinations, algorithms, and computability theory. I have experience in these areas through my undergraduate and graduate course work and my study of number theory and computability.
I began studying linear algebra during high school as part of my algebra II and pre-calculus classes. During college I continued my study with courses in linear algebra and abstract algebra. In those courses I worked with the properties of fields, vector spaces and linear subspaces. This included work with determinants, matrices, scalar operations, linear transformations, solutions of multi-variable systems of linear equations and functional analysis.
I have been tutoring students since I was a student at Davidson College. This continued through my years as a graduate student at Duke University where I was part of the team that helped tutor student athletes. I am certified in Secondary Math in the state of Texas and have taught Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Math Models in the Irving ISD. In that capacity I worked with students who had a wide range of abilities in math, both the math-challenged and the proficient. In addition, I worked extensively with students to improve their testing strategies to help with the TAKS test and the SAT. As a Secondary Math Teacher, an essential part of my job was preparing my students for the TAKS exam. We spent a significant amount of time each week with drills and testing strategies in order to help prepare them for the test. We also conducted practice testing sessions through the year to identify areas in which each student needed additional instruction. I am qualified to tutor for both the ACT and the SAT. Besides math, I have a strong background in reading, science and social studies, and I also tutored students in these subjects and helped prepare them for the TAKS exams in these areas.
Since the STAAR tests are basically end-of-course exams in various subjects, I am able to assist students with the preparation for these tests since I have taught and/or tutored the subjects on which these tests are based. In addition, I have extensive experience in helping students prepare for a variety of standardized tests, including the TAKS tests (which were the predecessor to the STAAR tests).
