Patient, Practical, and Punctual

Hello, My name is Philip, and I love to tutor and make the student a success. I graduated from Western Oregon University with a degree in speech communication, and I am also a certified tutor through Crossroads of Learning. In 2000, I spent two years in the United States Peace Corps. I lived in Africa and realized how lucky we are as Americans. I joined the United States Peace Corps where I was the first to implement the PACE project (Parents and Communities for Education). During this time I was competitively selected to begin a twelve-week training program in Namibia, Southwest Africa. The training emphasized both the policies and the practices of the educational system and educational reform at all levels of school. My responsibilities included working to enhance the professional capabilities of school-based staff as well as assist with community development. My goal was to strengthen the linkages between parents, teachers, and the communities they serve.

Study Skills

While in college I worked as Coordinator for Student Development for Talmadge Middle School in Oregon. My focus was to work with students and identify different learning strategies and to adapt these qualities into effective study skills, time management, and planning. As a member of the Multi-cultural Student Union I advised, mentored, and assisted students on how to create and implement effective note-taking to encourage the development of independent learning.

Sociology

I received my AA degree in Sociology and went on to teach Sociology in the United States, Europe, and Africa. The knowledge and experience I learned from teaching Sociology has given me the tools and expertise to fully embrace our diverse and cultural country we now know as the United States of America.
