I worked as an academic advisor for 8 months at a community college. I was assisting first year college students to pick courses and social activities that will suit the individual. My tutoring will be to help students select courses that will help them attain their career goal(s) and recommending interest and entrance tests and exams suitable for the student.
I worked as a special needs teacher assistant with kids diagnosed with ADD/ADHD for 4 1/2 years. My duties entailed assisting the teacher with instructions in carpentry, math and independently living. My way of tutoring is making sure the individual understands the subject at hand in a one-on-one setting. I know that someone with ADD/ADHD (adult or child) has a real problem paying attention and/or being still. I work patiently with them enabling them to grasp the lesson.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
I worked as a teacher assistant at a special needs school for 4 1/2 years. I worked with students diagnosed with autism. Also, during teacher workshop at the beginning of the school year we would have a briefing on autism. My duties included assisting the teacher in instructing carpentry, math and independent living. As a tutor I know some students require hand to hand assistance and I don't mind working hand to hand. I will work patiently with people with autism and not to make them think they are being pressured. I will work at their pace to ensure they understand the subject. As far as their social skills are concerned, I will work with them using tools to help them interact with others.
