I am an experienced tutor able to help with high school and college math and chemistry. My credentials include a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Kansas and extensive coursework in mathematics. I have been tutoring students since 1997 and have helped with a wide range of subjects including first grade through high school math, advanced placement chemistry, business calculus, and organic chemistry. I can assist with homework and test preparation. I am also willing to work with home... [more]
A solid grasp of the basic concepts I mastered in high school algebra has helped me succeed in a variety of classes from general chemistry and trigonometry to physical chemistry and combinatorial mathematics. As an algebra tutor, I want to help each student gain the mathematical tools necessary to build a successful academic career.
Throughout my academic studies, I have applied principles of algebra such as solving equations, graphing functions, and simplifying expressions. Much of my success in classes like calculus, physical chemistry, and combinatorial mathematics is due to mastery of the algebra skills I learned in high school. When I help with algebra,I pass on the problem solving skills and strategies that have proven invaluable to me.
Calculus was one of my favorite subjects in college. It was the first math course I took that involved not only symbol manipulation but also profound mathematical concepts. Later, courses like real analysis and numerical analysis deepened my understanding. I strive to help students develop the basic skills they need to succeed in class while also gaining an appreciation of the "big picture".
My degree is in chemistry, so this is my main area of expertise. I have helped many students master concepts like balancing chemical equations, understanding acid/base reactions, and performing calculations with moles and other units. I am happy to help with high school chemistry and with basic college classes like chemistry I, chemistry II, and organic chemistry.
I have experience both taking and helping with advanced math and science courses such as calculus and chemistry. This experience means that I know which basic math skills are essential to succeeding in algebra and beyond. I can provide assistance with basic skills such as performing calculations with fractions and decimals, solving equations, and working with percents and ratios.
Precalculus is an exciting, fast-paced course that combines algebra and trigonometry. I can help precalculus students with skills like solving triangles, verifying trig identities, simplifying algebraic expressions, and solving equations. Precalculus can seem overwhelming for students, but when taken one skill at a time, it is doable!
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division-- these are the key building blocks that comprise the foundation for success in math! Building that foundation requires a variety of approaches and activities. With my young students, I use traditional drills like flash cards and worksheets as well as fun activities like coloring and puzzles. I also emphasize the most important equation of all: positive attitude + consistent practice = success!
At Emporia State University, I earned A's in organic chemistry I and II. When I transferred to KU, I worked as a teaching assistant and taught organic chemistry lab. I can provide study strategies that will help make this challenging subject more manageable.
