I have five years of classroom experience with students from 6th to 12th grade, and ten years of experience teaching exam prep (SAT, ACT, and SAT II), including time at two of the largest exam prep companies in the country. I would love to use that experience to help your student achieve their maximum potential. I hold an MEd in secondary education as well as a BA in Linguistics and Middle Eastern Studies from Rutgers University, and a MA in Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies ... [more]
Basic Algebra skills stand as an important foundation for much of the higher mathematics students will see later on. It is important that they be mastered before a student moves on. I am particularly effective not only at teaching the base skills, but at linking them to both other forms of mathematics and to more real-world, concrete applications.
I am experienced in teaching American History for the AP and SAT II exams.
I find that many students struggle with biology because it seems to be just a set of disjointed facts for them to memorize. I can help your student improve their study skills to make learning those facts easier, and also put biology concepts into context, both with other subjects, and with the real world.
I have two years of experience in tutoring high school chemistry.
These basics are incredibly important to your student's ability to succeed in Algebra, Geometry, and beyond. As well as making sure that all of my students are standing on a firm mathematical foundation, I make sure to link the skills I am teaching to as many concrete applications as possible, which often helps students process them more completely.
I have been helping students, from middle school through college, improve their writing skills for almost ten years. I do not only provide help with grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure; I am particularly effective at helping students master the structure and format of the persuasive academic essay. This structure will be used for almost everything a student writes, from seventh grade book reports, to the SAT essay, on through a Masters dissertation. Writing skills are cumulative, and it is never too early for your student to start perfecting his.
Many students struggle with English classes because the basics (grammar and spelling, primarily) are not taught as thoroughly as they used to be in classrooms. These skills are still incredibly vital - students cannot learn to write effectively, or to process literature, without mastering them. I have years of experience helping students of all ages grasp the important basics and more advanced skills, including analysis of literature and the art of writing an effective essay.

SAT Math challenges test-takers by testing basic skills in unusual ways, requiring more problem analysis that many students are used to doing. I have over six years of experience teaching students to read beyond the often-confusing wording of the test questions, allowing them to apply the skills they have mastered effectively, including several little tips and tricks that make SAT Math less daunting.
I have experience helping students prepare for the AP World History exam, as well as helping them process the complex themes they will be expected to master in this course.
I have years of experience tutoring all subject areas for the GED, including high school math, English grammar, and writing.
SAT Reading is a little bit of a misleading title, as there are no points awarded for actually reading the material! Instead, test-takers earn points for properly analyzing the text they are given. I achieved a perfect 800 score for Reading when I was 16, and began teaching others when I was an undergraduate. With six years, and a lot of intuitive insight, under my belt, I can help your student maximize his or her potential, and get the right start to college applications.
The SAT Writing section presents many students with their biggest challenge on test day. Often, this is because (in addition to needing a brush-up on many grammar concepts), test-takers are not sure what the essay portion is expecting of them. I can help your students master the formula for an effective essay on the SAT - which will, in fact, give them the basic formula for effective writing for the rest of their academic careers.
The ASVAB presents a few unique challenges that make it different from other tests - the most basic is that test-takers are not permitted to use a calculator on the math portion. I can help you overcome this challenge, and others, with two years of experience teaching for the ASVAB.
I have six years of experience teaching ACT for some of the largest exam prep companies in the country.
I have over six years of experience teaching this section of the ACT for some of the largest exam prep companies in the country.
I have over six years of experience helping students prepare for the ACT Math section, providing test taking strategies as well as help with Algebra, Geometry, and Problem-Solving.
Many students are often surprised that the ACT Science section does not involve much science knowledge - instead, it is a specialized form of reading comprehension, using scientific topics and including charts and graphs. I can help your student refine the necessary skills, and don't worry - advanced knowledge of chemistry or physics is not required!
Elementary math skills form the foundation for all math classes students will take in middle and high school. I can help your student master arithmetic and problem solving skills so that they have a solid base to build their education on.
For the past two years, I have worked with elementary students at a tutoring center to improve their understanding not only of the basics of arithmetic, reading, and writing, but also problem solving. Many students struggle with taking the skills they have learned in theory, be they addition and subtraction, spelling, phonics, or grammar, and putting them into use in school and in real-world situations. Many students also have never been taught to translate these skills into a form that will allow them to succeed on standardized tests - which is, of course, the way most school systems test those skills. I can help your student improve those base skills, and take what she knows and use it on tests, in school, and in life.
For the past two years, I have worked with students of all ages (late elementary school to high school and even college) to improve their study skills. Often, even minor changes in their habits or approaches to schoolwork helps students get more out of their study time. I can help your student understand what their teachers are asking them to do, and how to create and execute plans to work smarter, as well as harder.
Many students find they have a disconnect between the skills they have learned in class and their ability to perform on standardized tests (such as the SOL's). Often, this is not because the student does not understand the material, but because the test is presenting the material and an unusual, and often confusing, way. I have years of experience helping students of all ages break through this barrier, helping them learn what the test expects of them, and how to apply the skills that they have to achieving higher test scores.
