Bright and Funny, Lots of Experience with Kids and Teens

I am a bright and enthusiastic 58-year-old wife and mother living in Chimayo, New Mexico...40 miles north of Santa Fe and 8 miles east of Espanola. Through the years I have acquired direct experience teaching and motivating kids. I have taught "Hands-On Science" to elementary school kids, served as a Girl Scout leader for 5 years, taught comparative religion classes at my church, and worked as a substitute teacher for FCPS, primarily with middle school children. My college degree is in ge... [more]

American History

I am qualified to tutor American History for students K-12. I have taken a number of American History courses at both the high school and college level and have also read hundreds of books on the subject. I would be able to make the characters and concepts come alive and seem pertinent.

Biology

I studied pre-med in college for 3 years and this included 2 very challenging Biology classes. Even though I eventually switched majors to study Geography, my love of the field of Biology has continued and I have read dozens of books on the subject during my adult years. I have also taught biology in middle school and high school as a substitute teacher for FCPS.

Ecology

My BA is in Geography, which is a broad subject and included classes in soils, climate, geology, vegetation patterns and many other subjects that pertain to Ecology. I also took two Biology courses that included aspects of plant and animal ecology. As a professional, I worked on contract to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as both a air photo analyst and as a consultant to the Office of Water, specializing in non-point source water pollution mitigation. Throughout my adult life I have been interested in ecology, biology and conservation, and have read many dozens of books on the subject for my own edification. I feel certain that I could do a good job tutoring a student in this subject.

Elementary Science

I enjoy working with elementary school aged children and my broad knowledge base would allow me to tutor science at this level. I have experience teaching "Hands On Science," an after school science program for 1st graders. I led a Brownie and Junior Girl Scout troop for 5 years, which included many instructional opportunities in nature and ecology. I have also taught an elementary school level course in the interconnected web of life and how to protect our environment. I understand that different children have different learning styles and will tailor my instruction to each individual child. I believe in positive reinforcement to steer a child toward better focus and study habits. I will sometimes employ non-traditional methods such as puzzles, music, art, games, and reading aloud to reinforce key concepts. I also feel it is important to have a sound working relationship with the child's parent(s) to better understand the child's needs and to enlist their cooperation in establishing good study habits.

Social Studies

Social Studies at the elementary and secondary school levels can include aspects of the following topics: political science, history, economics, religious studies, geography, psychology, anthropology, and civics. I am very well qualified to tutor in these areas. My BA is in Geography (both Physical Geography and Social Geography) with a minor in Psychology. I have pursued a lifelong passion of studying history, politics and anthropology. I have taught youth classes in comparative religions at my church. Many aspects of social studies are basically stories, with interesting characters, mystery, intrigue, problem solving and action. I have a flare for making a sometimes dry and boring subject more interesting and relevant to a young student. I am also aware that the basic facts and dates must be acquired for the sake of consistency and, of course, test taking. My basic strategy would be to have the student read to me, have me read to them (perhaps from sources outside the assigned text,) produce artwork that illustrates a particular point, make and work with date flashcards to solidify a timeline for events, play relevant music or use other unconventional teaching aids and methods to bring the material to life.
