With a B.A. and M.A. in journalism, mass communication and psychology, and continuing education in screenwriting and marketing, I'm an avid student and teacher of language, drama, human communication, relationship skills, and other such knowledge and insight where it will broaden accomplishment, insight and success. I have 35 years' professional experience and awards in teaching, training, mentoring, writing, editing, acting, directing, and more. I've worked in (and taught) magazine writin... [more]
I've been a professional writer (and editor) since 1984, and have written (and edited) for more than a dozen local, national and international newspapers, magazines and websites, with at least 200,000 readers. I've professionally written news stories, news analyses, short stories, screenplays, marketing materials, consulting notes, technical manuals, teaching curricula, and more. I've won awards as a news and feature writer, as a magazine editor, and as a nationally ranked script consultant and script doctor. And my grammar, punctuation, and proofreading proficiencies are in the nation's top five percent.
Began learning "desktop publishing" on the very earliest version of the Macintosh computer, while also studying publication layout and design as part of my M.A. in mass communications. Gained a great deal of desktop-publishing expertise "on the job" with various local, national and international newsletters, newspapers and magazines, using PageMaker, Quark XPress, Microsoft Publisher, or InDesign. I've further learned desktop-publishing for the Internet, using WordPress or SquareSpace applications to design and build websites. And I'm familiar with desktop publishing on both the Mac and PC platforms, as I've worked for employers with both. Further, through careful and patient coaching, I've helped several desktop-publishing novices become accomplished design and layout artists.
First began working on the Apple Lisa platform in 1982, switched over to the original Macintosh platform later that year. Since then I've owned at least five different Macintoshes, plus working on several others at different jobs. So I'm familiar with almost every possible iteration of the Macintosh computer and its operating systems, plus a huge variety of the software applications available for the Mac platform. I'm a "Mac explorer," always learning more and with a long, positive history of helping people -- friends, family, colleagues, company leaders, etc. -- better understand and utilize their Macs in every way these highly versatile tools can go.
I already had 10-plus years' of desktop-publishing experience before 2011, when I first began working on Microsoft Publisher. I have spent the last two years using Publisher to produce an intricate, ever-changing, information-packed weekly news bulletin for a 600-member church in Burbank. I have further used Publisher to meet numerous other church-publication needs, including new-member welcome booklets, missionary information books, weekly inserts and flyers, promotional posters, announcement sheets, discipline guides, etc. The church leadership acclaims my publication work on Publisher as "surpassing all expectations and an invaluable resource to the church."
I've been a student of film stories and film production since childhood, and have been a professional screenplay consultant in Hollywood since 1996. I have more than two dozen consultant credits on produced films (at least five of them major award-winners), and a dozen of my clients' scripts have attained win, place or show status in international screenwriting contests. I've also been a judge for five international screenwriting contests, including the AAA Script Competition, the Screenwriting Expo Competition, the Write of Passage Competition, and the Act One Script Competition. Since 2009 I have mentored more than 30 aspiring screenwriters, one-on-one or in groups of five, and each year a higher percentage of them gets optioned. And in 2010, Creative Screenwriting magazine ranked me as the #14 script consultant in the nation (out of 225 reviewed), right up there with Dr. Linda Seger and Michael Hauge.
