Reading has two parts: decoding the symbols and then comprehending what you read. I'm curious what your child is struggling with.
As a music student at James Madison University I had to take sight singing and ear training. At exams I was given a piece of music and only a starting pitch. I had to sing the entire classical piece from just having that one tone. My mentor John Cephas taught me ONLY by ear. I have perfect pitch. I understand intervals and can sing a 3rd, 4th 5th etc I can be given a piece of music and a starting pitch and sing the piece from the pitch to it's completion.

I hold a Bachelor of Science from James Madison University with a minor in music composition. I went on to The University of Alaska at Fairbanks to earn a secondary teaching credential. I taught five different science classes per day in remote Alaska with multi-grade levels. I worked for 8 years in Potomac, Md. as a one-on-one academic and study skills tutor. I did this 5 - 6 hours/day 5 days/week year round. I taught private and small class organizational, study and test taking skills. I vastly prefer to work with one child at a time and give them all of my attention.
I am an active musician. I write and sing and play the piano, fingerstyle guitar and sing. I have studied voice at Shenendoah University and with National Heritage Fellow Gaye Adegbalola at Augusta Heritage Center for a vocal performance class in 2012.
SOL"s are familiar to me as I am a certified teacher. It is the standard of learning measurement tool used in public schools. It is the "gate" one needs to walk through to move onto the next grade. Math, science, history and English are the primary subjects being tested. It is very stressful for ALL involved. I have taught/tutored all of these subjects with great success.
