Hello! I enjoy tutoring and helping students achieve. I have taught at all levels - university, community college, and most recently (as a substitute teacher) in high, middle and elementary school. These experiences have given me the ability to adjust my teaching methods and approach to specific needs of each age group and skill level. My Approach to Tutoring: My ACT, SAT and other admission test prep sessions involve practice, practice and practice. I also give my students test-taking str... [more]
As an engineer, I actually used algebra on a daily basis. This has given me an in-depth understanding of how to explain it. I have tutored high school and GED students on algebra for about 10 years. I've also worked as a algebra teacher in local charter schools.
Algebra II adds a few interesting topics like conic sections, trig functions and logs. I have taught algebra II in both public and charter high schools. My tutoring students improve. I love to use graphing calculators and tablets to illustrate the beauty of algebra II.
I am a licensed civil engineer and land surveyor. Geometry is fundamental to my profession. I taught geometry in charter high schools for several years.
I have taught and tutored prealgebra for several years. I have found it important to assure or strengthen the student's capability in basic arithmetic operations. Learning is best facilitated using visual tools followed by practice, practice, practice.
Precalculus is usually the pinnacle of high school mathematics. I have taught and tutored precalculus in Michigan and California. A good review of Algebra II and Trigonometry will usually correct any problems current students are having. I like to use a liberal dose of graphics to explain the concepts.
I have taught trigonometry for 5 years in local schools and 4 years in California. I find that a good review of the Unit Circle is very helpful to new or returning trig students. I love showing practical applications for trig.
Astronomy has been a serious hobby of mind since childhood. I own and frequently use a 12-inch reflector. My interest in astronomy drove me to take three college courses as well as study physics and quantum mechanics.
The SAT math test is graded differently from the ACT math exam. There are advantages to taking one exam over the other. I have taught and tutored all subjects on both exams. I've learned some proven test taking techniques to improve your score.
I have helped many adult learners prepare for the GED exam over the last 15 years. My favorite subjects are math and science. I hold a Community College Instructor credential in six subject areas, having taught at two community colleges.
The key to doing well on the SAT Reading exam is practice your grammar and vocabulary words. You will not read long passages like on the ACT Reading Exam. I will teach you the common grammar traps and tricks. There are techniques and strategies that will assure you have enough time to complete the exam.
My past education and training as a graduate engineer has prepared me to teach all physical science subjects. I have taken chemistry, physics, and geology. Additionally, I taught these subjects in high school for several years.
The ASVAB exam is much like the SAT and ACT. I helped my daughter score high enough on the exam for a higher rank upon entering the Navy. I will teach or strengthen you in the basics using visuals, games, and drill.
The PSAT exam measures math problem-solving skills, writing skills, and critical reading skills. I have tutored students in these areas for almost five years. My approach is to break down the reading passages in a logical manner to identify the key facts. Math concepts are reviewed and reinforced. Writing is strengthened by reviewing the rules of grammar.
I have tutored kids in the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. The SSAT is written in the same style. Note: The essay portion of the exam is not scored, but sent to the school for review.
The ACT reading exam is composed of four reading passages: Social Studies, Natural Sciences, Humanities, and Prose Fiction. You will get 10 questions from each passage. A few helpful notes: Answer the easy questions from each passage first. Skip the tough ones and come back to them later. Pay attention to the story and characters, but don't get bogged down in the specific details of the passage.
I've tutored students on ACT English for several years. You will have approximately 30 seconds per question. The ACT English Test instructions warn that you may need to read beyond a question in order to answer it correctly. By being familiar with the entire passage, you can avoid the problem of not having read far enough ahead.
The ACT Math test includes arithmetic, algebra, plane & coordinate geometry and trigonometry. I have taught all of these subjects in both public and charter schools over the years. My students (including my own daughters) have achieved higher scores after my tutoring.
The ACT Science test contains seven passages, each followed by 5-7 questions. Understanding and interpreting passages is what's key to achieving a high score. I have tutored students in this area for 4 years. I am an engineer trained in interpreting data.
Elementary math provides the foundation for all future math learning. I use audio, visual, and gaming techniques to make sure my students understand the concepts. I want your child to feel confident, have fun, and like math.
Elementary science includes earth science, biology, astronomy, and chemistry. I taught elementary science at the grade 3 to 6 level for several years. I have found that children are natural explorers, and love being "hands-on".
I have been a long term elementary school substitute teacher in several charter schools in the Detroit area. I taught reading, grammar, science, math, P.E., and writing. I tutored for 5 years at McKinley Elementary School in Toledo, Ohio.
Academic coaching has become a staple in my coaching practice. I taught study skills as part of a prep class given by UC, Berkeley Extension. I strive to find a study method that fits not only the individual student, but also the class material.
I am a Certified Professional Coach after training and examination from the Folwer Wainwright Institute. Additional training was completed at the Workplace Coach Institute. I have coached clients in career development for three years.
I have a B.S. degree where I took chemistry and biology. I have been approved to tutor ACT Math, Science, English and Reading by WyzAnt. The TEAS covers the same subjects. I have already helped two pre-nursing students prepare for the TEAS.
