Well hello there! My name is Christie. I'm a 28-year-old college graduate from Arcadia University, and I have recently completed my Master's in Business Administration with the University of Phoenix. I am young, vibrant, energetic and GREAT with kids! I have experience tutoring people of all ages, and I love helping students learn and grow. My strengths are math, writing and computer skills, but I'm flexible and willing to learn and grow with the students I work with as well. My strengths ... [more]
I've worked as a Math Education major at Arcadia University. I have taken a few Education Courses at a University Level as well as Psychology courses (including Learning and Cognition and Developmental Psychology) that have helped me to understand the minds of young children and effective ways of teaching and learning. I also had two sessions where I was a student observer (part of the education curriculum) in a 6th grade classroom at an Elementary School near my University, where I was able to observe and learn effective teaching methods in a real Mathematics Elementary Education setting. I have taken and passed the basic Praxis 1 Exam, which is required to be a teacher. In addition to my coursework, I also had several years during High School where I was a tutor for local students in their homes. I worked with students Grades 1 ? 12, focusing specifically in Math, English and Sciences. All of my students were able to improve their grades in their courses by at least one letter grade. I was also a peer mentor with Keene Elementary School in Newark, DE where I would meet with 1st and 2nd grade students after school in a group setting to help them with reading and math. I was a student teacher for Junior Achievement, where I went into classrooms once per week for a few months each to teach them about money, business and community dynamics. I have many resources including flash cards, games, textbooks, etc. which are useful in helping children to understand elementary subjects. In addition to my traditional coursework and experience, I have also had some untraditional experience including nannying and babysitting, where I worked with the children I was watching with their skills including Math and Reading. I also have a four year old at home with whom I work with writing letters, numbers, counting, songs, shapes, colors, etc. With my traditional and untraditional experiences, innovative teaching methods and patience with children, I know I could be an effective elementary education tutor.
While I have not had any traditional coursework in ?study skills?, I graduated from my university with a 3.85 GPA, mostly due to my excellent organization and study skills. As a psychology minor I have learned a lot about the brain and how it works, how we learn and our memory. From this coursework, I have identified and researched effective studying techniques, especially when it comes to memory retention. I utilized these learned skills when studying for my own coursework in college and found it to be very effective. I also understand the different personality types and how some people are visual learners and others may not be. It is very important to identify learning styles and adapt effective methods of learning and studying based on this identification. Another important part of studying is organization. By keeping notes and papers organized, it is easier for students to study and review what they have. My familiarity with these different learning styles will make it easy for me to share my skills with others. As far as tutoring experience, I was a peer mentor and tutor in high school and in college, where I spent a lot of time helping students study for exams and keep organized in addition to helping with particular subject needs. I was also a Resident Assistant at Arcadia University and member of ?For the Women?, a Women?s organization at my University. In both of these organizations we hosted campus programs focusing on studying skills, organizational tips and how to stay on track for graduation. These were open programs that we hosted for the student body where we had professors, students and alumni present on tips and tricks for studying. I was a presenter at these campus programs each time we hosted it. Through all of these experiences I have adapted enough skills that I can share my knowledge and help teach others.
Currently, I am more than half way finished my Master's Degree in Business. So far I have a 3.95 GPA and I am excelling in my courses. I work in a business setting and have a very strong understanding of business concepts including accounting, management, leadership skills, etc. I am very proficient in writing business papers, specifically APA style writing. Though I am not an expert, I feel that my skills, education, and knowledge sufficiently qualify me for the subject.
I use Microsoft Outlook for business everyday. It is a very simple tool to use. I am very familiar with the tools and tricks to utilize and personalize outlook to your preferences. I can go step by step and personalize a lesson for a student's particular outlook needs.
Microsoft Windows is the only operating software I have ever used. I have been using Windows since Windows 95, and have become expert at using the interface. I can navigate, troubleshoot, and provide simple to remember instructions on how to navigate the system. I have helped many people including family, friends, and other tutoring students on how to navigate Windows to successfully complete tasks. I am patient and willing to break things down into very simple, easy to remember steps for those new computer users.
After passing the Praxis 1 with ease, I have also assisted several students with the Praxis 1. I have not worked specifically with the Praxis 2 or subject tests, but I do have a good understanding of the types of questions offered on the Praxis. Most questions on the Praxis are basic Algebra, reading comprehension, and some writing requirements, which I am more than qualified to tutor. My familiarity with the Praxis is a strong asset to tutoring for this particular test as it differs slightly from the SAT and other similar tests.
I graduated with a B.A. in Sociology from Arcadia University. My university required many different subjects in Sociology, the ones I have taken include: Introduction to Sociology, Contemporary Social Problems, Gays and Lesbians in American Society, Anthropology 101 and others. I passed all of these classes with an A. My favorite thing about Sociology is writing papers, especially research papers. I worked at the University Writing Center as a Writing Center consultant and was considered the ?go-to person? for Sociology and Psychology papers. My role in that position was to help students improve their writing skills, more specifically in the case of sociology papers how to format and write specific to psychology and sociology requirements. I am very familiar with APA format and can help with any writing requirements, as Sociology is mostly writing and essay based. In addition to the writing portion, I have developed a ?sociological perspective? through my coursework and am able to look at social issues and problems with a more social view instead of an individual based one. This skill is particularly important when tutoring someone in Sociology because some students have trouble looking at situations from this view and struggle with the sociological concepts. As a Sociology tutor, I can articulate and help explain difficult sociological phenomenon in a way that is easy to understand. I had some hands on experience in teaching others this while I was a professor?s assistant in a basic sociology course as part of my graduation requirement. I would occasionally stay after class and offer help to students who had not taken sociology before. In addition I was a student mentor on our department discussion boards where I would help answer questions that students had in relation to sociology coursework and assignments. I have plenty of literature, textbooks and articles that I can utilize as resources to help explain certain things as well.
I have used Microsoft Project for many different projects at my work and while I was in school including calendars, flyers, invitations, gant charts, etc. I am very proficient with the program and feel that I can adequately share my knowledge of the program with others. At work, I assist other coworkers with the use of this project when they are working on different things such as gant charts and calendars. My knowledge about Microsoft Office in general and the tools available to learn more about the program will be useful to teach others how to use it.
