I am an accomplished tutor with more than five years of volunteer and professional tutoring experience in a variety of subjects. My strongest suit is language acquisition, having studied Spanish, Latin, German, Italian, Japanese, Scottish and Irish. I hold a BA in Japanese, continued at the graduate level, and am currently studying for the JLPT N1. I lived in Japan for a year on study abroad, with a host family and on my own, so I've got a pretty good grasp of the culture too. A third-genera... [more]

American History

Apart from getting a degree in history, I have devoted a great deal of my academic studies on the subject. My specialization is in modern American history with a focus on politics and economics, with a good general knowledge of all the rest. I am particularly interested and well versed in American's place in world history and how the United States has interacted with other countries over the years.

My studies of English continued through graduate school and I have a professional level competency without a degree in English. In studying the root languages of English I also obtained a deep understanding of grammar, spelling and vocabulary.

I have a BA in Japanese language and social studies, and continued studying the language at the master's level. Macroeconomics

My master's degree in international policy included an extensive study of economics. I have studied macro, micro, international, and a great deal of development economics. I've never been that great with math, and studying economics was difficult in the beginning. However, I learned many tips and techniques that helped me succeed and may help me tutor others not so mathematically inclined.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have several years experience at this grade level as a substitute teacher and para-professional in Special Education classes. The subject matter and teaching methods used were largely the same as those used in non-Special Ed classes, and most of the classes I worked in were at the K-6th level. I have a very strong background in general education and enjoy working with children.

Study Skills

Professionally, I tutored several students in a class all about study skills at College Living Experience in Monterey, California. I helped developmentally disabled students learn how to organize, create specific and reasonable goals, and improve their grades by focusing on learning methods tailored to their strengths. I am very familiar with learning style inventories, study methods that revolve around the various styles, and how to utilize them to your advantage.

Anthropology

A lifelong student of anthropology, I have studied both physical and cultural anthropology at the undergraduate level. I keep up with modern anthropological news and have an extensive knowledge of many cultures from my research in other areas. Professionally I tutored Anthropology at College Living Experience in Monterey, California.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I worked for several years as a substitute teacher and para-professional in K-12 and post-secondary Special Education classrooms. I have interacted with autistic students of all levels, and am familiar with the symptoms and treatments for autism. As a tutor I have worked with developmentally disabled college students, primarily those with autism. I am confident in my abilities tutoring autistic students as well as those studying autism.

Bar Exam

I am a licensed attorney in the state of Maryland. I passed the Maryland Bar on my first attempt in June, 2017. I am familiar with both the Barbri and Themis approaches to studying for the bar. I took a course specifically on bar exam prep in law school that covered a variety of study and organization habits.

Microsoft Windows

As an operating system I have used most every version of Windows to date, and am currently using versions 7 and 8 on my own computers. As a technician at the CSU Monterey Bay Language Lab I was trained to operate and troubleshoot Windows machines, and trained others in turn. Professionally, I tutored basic Windows skills at College Living Experience in Monterey, California.

Social Studies

All my years of collegiate study were in the area of social studies, and I have taken classes in every single subject encompassed by the term "social studies". With a graduate degree in international policy, my greatest strengths are in politics, economics and geography. I have also studied global history and many of the cultures of the world in great depth.
