As a 20-year veteran at a 6-12 grade alternative school, I have a wide variety of methods for helping students learn in a multitude of disciplines. I teach all levels of 9-12 English, from basic to advanced, including reading, writing, grammar and literature. In addition, I run the GradPoint computer lab, where I assist students with lessons in pre-algebra, algebra, civics, economics, US and world history, and English. As an added bonus, I have taught K-12 theatre arts, which means I know ... [more]

Algebra 1

As an English teacher who is proficient in math, I am often able to explain math concepts to students who do not understand them as explained by a traditional math teacher. Instead of using traditional methods, I can shape lessons to fit individual students. I use real-life examples, which is precisely the goal of the Common Core standards.

Elementary Science

Elementary (K-6th)

I have three years teaching K-12 theatre arts. I was a camp counselor for five summers, and worked as a tutor/mentor for Boys and Girls club last summer. Several of my staff development courses have covered K-12 education.

Study Skills

One of the primary responsibilities as a teacher in an alternative school is teaching students who have poorly adapted study skills. I have taught specific courses in "study skills" and "life skills", and have acted in a mentoring capacity for students learning study skills. I also address study skills regularly in my regular classrooms, teaching note-taking, test-taking strategies, and study strategies.

Theater

I minored in theatre at Davidson College. For three years I taught K-12 theatre arts in Pamlico County and Union County, where I won NCTC awards for directing, lighting, and choreography. I have been the drama club sponsor for 17 years at my school, and have taught classes to local students in stage makeup, stage combat, and improv. I have acted professionally with an improv company in Raleigh and with the professional theatre in my town.

Special Needs

As a teacher in an alternative school, I work closely with the exceptional children's teacher to meet the needs of all students. Our school is currently 12% special needs, including Aspergers, SLD, ADHD, MMR, and other health impaired. I have also taken a course at East Carolina University specifically dealing with meeting the needs of special needs students.

ADHD

As a teacher at an alternative middle and high school I have taught numerous children with ADD and ADHD, both medicated and un-medicated. Additionally, I have two children with ADHD whom I have assisted with their learning since young childhood. I have also taken courses on working with ADD/ADHD children through NC DPI and my local LEA.

Praxis

As a certified teacher, I studied for and took the teachers' exam myself. As the lead mentor for my school, I have assisted first-third year teachers preparing for their Praxis. Each of my mentees (more than 10 over the past five years) has passed successfully.

Social Studies

Since I started working in the NovaNet computer lab 20 years ago (now known as GradPoint), I have assisted literally hundreds of students with a variety of social studies courses, including US, world, and NC history, psychology, and geography. I have also tutored my own two children through all the lessons from 3-8 grade social studies.
