My experience with teaching vocabulary starts with letter recognition, word meaning, using the word in a sentence and letter sounds. The next strategy would be to help the student write a paragraph using correct sentence structure and correct vocabulary that helps the paragraph to flow smoothly and understandable.
I have taken college courses to learn strategies to help students who struggle with reading comprehension. I help the student to read short paragraphs then question (characters, main idea, details) writing them down in an organized way to help them understand and succeed.
I have been teaching English skills to students who have deficits in this subject. I help the student to understand the parts of speech, sentence structure and hands on skills. I have also passed the exam that allows me to be approved to tutor this subject. I have also had the experience of tutoring students who need assistance to enter into 8th grade. I took several college courses to learn strategies to help students who struggle understanding the mechanics of English.
I am qualified to teach Special Needs students because I have my BS in Special Education cetirtificates LBS1 in Learning Disabilties, Cognitive Delayed,Behavior Disorder, Severe and Profound and Autism . I have taught students with learning, emotional and behavioral deficits, as well as those of extremely low functioning abilities (Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, cognitive delays, etc.) With all these different areas, I have developed an individualized educational program to meet the specific deficit area with success.
I have used basic ASL with my my special needs students helping they learn to communicate and eventually start talking again. I also took a sign language course at the Chicago Hearing Society. I know and understand sign language and I am able to teach basic signs to children to help to communicate with family. I have been involved in sight language for about 3 years.
I am qualified to teach students with ADD, being a special education teacher, I have had to implement different strategies to help the student stay on task. Students that have various deficits sometimes also have ADD/ADHD, therefore I have written IEPs to specifically address this deficit. One strategy that I used was time on task for a certain amount minutes, break, then repeat, the goal is for the student to eventually be able to stay on task longer over a period of time. Use of a reinforcer of the student's preference will also help to motivate the student to stay focus and on task for longer periods of time successfully.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
I have taught students with autism for over 15 years I know how to set up work stations, structure the classroom, individualized each student's program based on their potential. I took the class for autism and received my endorsement to teach this specific disability. I have experience in writing IEPs to meet the specific goals that need to be mastered along with integration of the general education subjects for the Autistic students to be able to learn at their ability level with success us. The skills that I have taught my former students have helped them to be integrated with their non- disabled peers, graduate with honors and continue their education at the college level.
Hard of Hearing
I feel that I can help the hard of hearing student because I do have the ability of doing sign language and therefore able to communicate with them helping them to be successful. I taught a deaf student and was able to communicate with him using sign language, pictures, various visual aides and modeling, all of which helped the student to make progress at his ability level.
