Hands-on Tutor Who Makes Learning Engaging and Motivating

I have benefited from the advice of teachers, learning, specialists and administrators in very different classroom environments. I value individuality and strive to meet the needs of each student. To accomplish this, I use a variety of hands-on activities and different teaching strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles. I like to incorporate fun and games into my tutoring to keep the student engaged and focused, as well as motivated. I help my students enjoy learning and teach them ho... [more]

Writing

I was an English major in college and love to write. I taught 7th grade English last year. I have attended professional development on incorporating writing across the curriculum. I have taught lessons on writing process, providing textual evidence, bibliographies, annotating, etc. While attending Vanderbilt, we had to find and learn about researched based writing practices to use in the classroom.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold my New York state teaching certification in Elementary Education 1-6 and Special Education 1-9. I spent the past two years teaching third grade. I have been tutoring since 2005. When I moved to Nashville in August of 2012, I began tutoring as well. I currently tutor elementary students at University School of Nashville. I also have a Master's degree in Educational Technology K - 12 and am working on my second Master's degree in Deaf Education PreK - 12.

Study Skills

I have been tutoring for years and over the last few years I have worked with middle and high schoolers on study skills and organization. We work on taking the study guide, or chapter, whatever their test may be on and breaking it down into smaller, more manageable chunks. That way they aren't cramming the night before. I also make it more fun and memorable by creating games, such as memory match, with concepts and making foldables. We also work on making sure they know the material and can teach it to someone else. I have several studying and organizational skills I can use with students, and this also incorporates time management skills.

Special Needs

I am currently certified in Special Education grades 1-12 in both Tennessee and New York. I just took a job as a Special Education teacher in at Brentwood High School in Tennessee. I have had a great deal of experience with children who are deaf, have learning disabilities, Aspergers, autism, Down's syndrome, etc. I have had experience with these types of needs at Vanderbilt University and in the teaching field.

Sign Language

I graduated with a masters degree in deaf education and in that program I had to take three semesters of American Sign Language. I used ASL while working in my other classes as well. I know how to finger spell and tell stories using ASL.

ADHD

I am certified in Special Education grades 1-9. I just graduated in May from Vanderbilt University where I received my second masters degree in Deaf Education. While taking classes there, we had to take several special education classes, focusing on kids with Down Syndrome and also ADD/ADHD. They also made us have practicum experiences with different types of students as well. I know how to work with children with ADD/ADHD and how to differentiate my instruction to meet their needs. I tend to use more kinesthetic approaches to teach them.

Hard of Hearing

I am going into my second year of Deaf Education at Vanderbilt University. This is my second masters degree. I have learned and worked with individuals with all types of hearing loss. I know how to create lessons for them and make sure hearing aids and cochlear implants are properly working.
