English

I taught language arts for 18 years at the junior high level, and as a kindergarten teacher I taught reading, phonics and handwriting for five years. I have also taught English as a second language to Japanese exchange students and overseas. As an instructional designer for ESL curriculum, I also acted as the overseer for proofreading and editing for the various publications for the corporation I worked for overseas. I enjoy the English language and feel confident teaching many levels of grammar, writing spelling and punctuation skills.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a California life teaching credential, with multicultural emphasis, for elementary education. I have taught in public and private schools for twenty-five years at the elementary and junior high levels. I have also tutored students varying in age from two through 18.

Phonics

After teaching kindergarten for five years and teaching my own children to become avid readers, I have acquired effective methods and strategies to help children learn the phonics they need to become successful readers, writers and spellers. I have used several different, widely-accepted phonics methods successfully, such as SRA, Hooked on Phonics, Open Court and Lindamood (previously Auditory Discrimination in Depth). Throughout the many years I have taught reading and phonics, I have developed many strategies to make reading an enjoyable activity for students.

Study Skills

I have taught three study skills classes. I also served on a committee that wrote a study skills manual that was used for the entire school where I taught. The manual was part of the school's focus on helping all students achieve their potentials in research and study skills.

Special Needs

During my career as an educator, I have been a swimming teacher for mentally and physically disabled students, learned sign language (ASL and SEE sign) and taught in school programs for the deaf, taken one semester of speech therapy classes, and helped with developing numerous IEPs for autistic and physically and/or mentally disabled students. When I was a substitute teacher, I was put on the list as a special needs educator, so I received numerous assignments in various special needs classrooms. I also have significant experience with Asperger's Syndrome, including a year of tutoring a student with Asperger's in remedial reading and math skills.

Sign Language

I have taken two years of dactylology courses at American River College in Sacramento. I have also tutored deaf students at a Sacramento high school, and I taught my own children some basic sign language.

ADHD

As a public school teacher for 23 years, I have worked closely with over 50 ADD/ADHD students. I helped with and implemented IEPs (individual educational programs)and developed strategies to help these students succeed in a mainstream classroom. I have also tutored several ADD/ADHD students, not only helping them succeed in their education but also instilling a love and enthusiasm for learning.
