I received an Award of Excellence for my Praxis Test in the General Science Content Knowledge exam. I am the teacher who motivates students to learn how to use science to solve problems and subsequently understand how the world works. I can do this by incorporating the 5 E?s of l... [more]

Biology

I am a certified teacher for Biology in Connecticut. My love and interest in biology started over 30 years ago and I was inspired by my High School Honors Biology teacher. I continued through AP Biology and received an award for Excellence in Biology in high school. Throughout all of my coursework I have taken several biology courses including: general biology, fisheries biology, evolutionary biology, and my area of expertise for my dissertation - aquatic insect biology. My love of the subject matter and my interest in biology combined with my expertise in ecology provides me with excellent background knowledge for several biology courses at the middle school, high school, and college level. In addition, I have recently tutored students in Honors and General Biology courses, as well as middle school science.

Chemistry

Physical Science

The State of Connecticut 9th grade high school science course has physical science as a major component of the year-long course. I spent two years teaching this course at a public high school. Thus, I have already created lesson plans to use in any tutoring session. I also have experience in conducting several laboratory experiments during my teaching career. This teaching experience is coupled with my extensive course background in physical science. Some courses that I have taken during my college and post-graduate career include but are not limited to Limnology (study of fresh waters), Coastal Ecosystems, Rivers of California, Physical Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Land Use and Water Quality, Geomorphology, Fluvial (Rivers) Geomorphology, Acid Precipitation, Hazardous Substances in Water, and Water Quality Analysis & Interpretation.

Geology

I am a certified teacher for General Science in Connecticut. As part of the 9th grade course that I most recently taught, there was a general chemistry component. I have also taken courses in general chemistry and environmental toxicology. Furthermore, I am currently tutoring high school students in Honors Chemistry.

Ecology

I have over 25 years of experience in the environmental science field. Most recently, I assisted the APES teacher at my previous school in field trips and review sessions for the exam. I also was a Student Teacher for an APES course in New Fairfield, CT, while as part of my requirements for my science certifications in Connecticut. My teaching experience includes all different grade levels such as: 1) Leading informal river educational field trips for various groups including a Girl Scout troop; 2) Presenting lessons for elementary and middle school students at their respective schools; 3) Assisting high school students in testing their own drinking water supply and giving lessons while living and working overseas in Palau; 4) Working as a Teaching Assistant while obtaining my PhD in Ecology; and 5) Designing and teaching an environmental science course to adults at a community college. I have worked in academia, private consulting, a foreign government, and as a volunteer for a non-profit organization. I have lived in and studied numerous locations and environment throughout the United States including Connecticut, New York, Vermont, Colorado, California, and Utah. I bring all of my experiential knowledge of these environments to my teaching.

ACT Science

As a scientist and researcher, I have spent my career evaluating scientific data. I have extensive experience and can easily help students succeed in their endeavors to score high on the ACT Science Test. The test consists of Data Representation Passages, Research Summaries Passages, and a Conflicting Viewpoints Passage. The reading, understanding, and interpretation of data are crucial for understanding science. Finally, I believe that standardized tests are about a student's knowledge of the material as well as one's ability to take standardized tests.
