As a former middle/high school math teacher, I am very effective helping struggling students to succeed in math. My expertise ranges from students just learning how to multiply and divide to those who struggle with algebra concepts or are preparing to take the SAT. My master's degree is in Math Education. My doctorate is in Quantitative Research Methods (e.g., statistics, SPSS). While there is role for memorization, I believe in focusing on working with students to develop an understanding of... I taught Algebra I for five years (8th grade, 9th grade, and college algebra).
In my career, I regularly use MS Excel spreadsheets to organize data and prepare various types of charts (e.g., bar charts, line graphs). Using Excel formulas and Pivot tables, I am able to provide summary information on these data.
As a former middle/high school math teacher, I have taught pre-algebra for 7th and 8th grade as well as high school students. In addition to teaching, I have tutored students across the breadth of math topics from multiplication/division to fractions to algebra and geometry. Therefore, I have a deep understanding of the math concepts that are critical for success in the subsequent math courses.
At the college level, I have taught undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics. These courses have focused on descriptive and inferential statistics (e.g., t-tests, ANOVA, regression, Chi-square). Throughout my career over the last 20 years, I have conducted various statistical analyses as well as provided written descriptions of the results.
As a former middle/high school math teacher, I have vast experience with the math content on the SAT. When needed, I am able to break the content down into manageable pieces such that the student can understand the content and be successful. I believe that student, with the right supports and guidance, can be successful in mathematics.
Over the last 20 years, I have assisted several students successfully prepare for the GED. While most of my expertise is in the math portion, I can also assist with the reading section as well.
Not only have I used SPSS in my current profession for the last 15 years, I have taught graduate and undergraduate courses in statistics, requiring the use of SPSS.
Providing a solid foundation in mathematics is crucial. But for some students, math can seem challenging. I am able to work with students to UNDERSTAND the mathematical concepts important in elementary school especially as it relates to multiplication, division, fractions, and identifying patterns.
I have a master's in math education (M.Ed.) with a focus on secondary education. I also have a valid math teaching certificate (grades 6-12) from Texas. Since I have also been tutoring in math for 20+ years from grades 4 through graduate statistics courses, I have a strong foundation in teaching the mathematics that is expected in the school setting (public or private). I have also been asked by two parents recently that I was already tutoring to provide some extra practice for the ISEE.
