Hi, my name is Sharon, and I am an experienced teacher. I have taught elementary, middle, and high school students. My subject strength is the language arts. I am patient and friendly, but I also have high expectations for all my students. I believe that with the right teacher or tutor, any student can learn as long as he/she is motivated. I also have a talent for motivating students who are frustrated and have lost confidence in themselves. With my husband, an educator too, I have created a... [more]
My Spanish language qualifications are included in the letter.
I taught SAT/ACT preparation before and after the SAT 2016 changes. My expertise is the English and Writing sections. I have five years experience teaching SAT prep in high school after classes. I help strengthen a students' vocabulary precision, and strategic analyzation of writing styles.
After teaching high school and college English, I retired. With my free time, I designed an online preparation course for the TOEFL. It includes English grammar/usage, vocabulary development, comprehension in reading and writing, and articulation in English speaking. My students feel they have made excellent progress with my course, especially the Face Time listening and speaking sections.
While I was a high school teacher, and after I retired, I taught SAT and ACT preparation. My specialization was the English language portions with concentration on the essay section. I taught students how to analyze a given document on the exam, and then how to write an analysis demonstrating the author's use of precise vocabulary, and particular writing strategies in order to persuade the reader to accept his/her argument as a valid truth.
My teaching credential certifies me to teach pre-school through sixth grade. I have taught every grade from kindergarten through sixth grade. Fifteen of my teaching years were spent in elementary grades. During that experience I developed a beginning reading program, a critical-creative thinking curriculum for children, and a CST preparation studybook for elementary grades. I am more than competent to teach elementary school subjects.
I have used the phonics method to teach reading to students in elementary through high school. I am familiar with the phonics method used in Open Court textbooks, Treasures, and English as a Second Language. With the help of my husband, also an educator, I designed a Beginning Reading program with phonics as the foundation. I am confident I could teach any level of phonics to improve reading fluency and comprehension.
I have taught each of the grades in elementary, middle, and high school. During those years I developed study methods for individuals and classes. I taught students how to organize their materials, structure their time, and study efficiently and effectively. I also wrote a preparation studybook for the CST (California State Test).
I am qualified to teach students preparation for the ISEE. I studied the ISEE exam for six months, and then I wrote my own test preparation program. I have worked with students who were taking the ISEE to enter the eighth grade, and other students taking it to enter private high schools. They all passed the exam. I have a BA in English with a minor in Spanish; I also have all my Master's credits in English. I had a teaching credential for K-9th grades in Multiple Subjects.
