Professional Nerd for Hire: ACT/SAT/LSAT/Academic

Hello, I?m a professional tutor from Orlando with over 5 years of experience. My job is to help you learn whatever it is you need to learn so that you can achieve your goals. I'm a recent graduate of Rollins College (Magna Cum Laude) with degrees in Anthropology, Religious Studies, and Archaeology. I began tutoring as an undergraduate there. A couple years later I was recruited by Princeton Review and then CORE Tutors to begin tutoring professionally. This means that I have over 6 years of e... [more]

Prealgebra

I have worked as a pre-algebra/algebra I teacher with the after school program "Boys and Girls Club of Central Florida." I have experience teaching the subject one on one or in a group setting. Each lesson will be planned around learning a single formula or group of related formulas. After sufficient review of the central lesson for the day, we will focus on seeing the variety of settings in which those formulas could be used.

Reading

Writing

I worked as a writing consultant to undergraduate and graduate students while at Rollins College. Additionally, I worked as the editor of the Rollins College Undergraduate Research Journal. I am a contributing author of three scientific articles. Those articles are: slave law in Ancient Rome (2010), gender norms in the virtual world (2011), and archaeology of the Swahili coast and the African hinterland (2013).

ESL/ESOL

I have worked as an ESL tutor for native French, Spanish, German, Czech, and Russian speakers. My lessons are geared towards teaching "language encounters" rather than focusing strictly on grammar. The best way to master a language is through conversation, not grammatical memorization. My teaching style reflects this.

SAT Math

As an undergrad at Rollins I worked as a TA for several professors in the math department. My responsibilities included creating test content, running study sessions, and teaching individual sections within the larger class. Our math sessions will begin by looking at the general strategy to the SAT math test to create a plan of attack. We will go over important test taking skills such as time management, guessing vs skipping, shortcuts, etc. Then we do a review of the formulas that will appear on the test. At that point we will be able to put these two parts together to create a personalized test taking strategy that you can use to earn your highest possible score.

Literature

World History

While in high school, I earned a 5 on the World History AP exam and a 5 on the US History AP exam. Additionally, I earned a 780 on the US History SAT II. While in college, I minored in archaeology. My coursework included extensive study of the history of the world from 50,000 years up to the modern day. During that time I published a paper on ancient Rome (2010) and African archaeology (2013). Additionally, I worked as the social sciences editor for the Rollins College Undergraduate Research Journal. My world history lessons are not just focused on rote memorization of people, places, and dates. Rather, they are geared towards helping my clients understand the forces of history that clashed to create the modern world.

LSAT

GED

I have worked as a standardized test prep tutor for over four years, working with clients on the SAT, ACT, GRE, GED, and LSAT. My lessons are geared towards teaching you the strategy that underlies each test. Once we have covered testing strategies (how many question to answer, time management, how to eliminate answer choices/guess appropriately, etc.) we will begin to cover the actual material in the test by completing previously administered tests.

SAT Reading

I scored a 750 on my SAT Critical Reading. Our lessons will focus both on building up a solid vocabulary foundation and on showing how formulaic SAT reading passages are. You will learn the skills needed to dissect the passages so that you can identify the function of specific parts in the passage, the meaning of the passage, and inferences that the author makes. As we build up the knowledge base that the critical reading section requires, we will also work on understanding basic test taking skills that the SAT demands such as identifying when to skip questions, knowing how many questions are needed to achieve a certain score, knowing how to save time, and so on. We will then put these two aspects together to create a personalized test taking strategy geared towards earning you your highest possible score.

SAT Writing

I scored a 780 on my SAT writing section with an essay score of 11. I have worked as a standardized test prep teacher for the past 4 years, both with national test prep companies and on my own. My SAT English lessons focus on learning the underlying grammatical rules that the SAT tests. Additionally, I will work with you to develop test taking strategies such as time management, knowing how to guess and skip, answer elimination, etc. Then we will put both parts together to create a cohesive test taking strategy geared towards earning you your highest possible score.

Study Skills

Many students feel overwhelmed with the sheer volume of information that is presented to them through their classes, lectures, and textbooks. My study skills classes help students learn organizational skills, time management, reading/listening comprehension, and note taking. While these sorts of organizational habits come naturally to some, others have a hard time putting all of their resources into a single, understandable, and cohesive whole. The study skills I teach are applicable from elementary school to graduate coursework.

Theater

I have worked as an actor for the past several years. I have performed both on stage and on the screen. My venues range from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to the Orlando Repertory Theater to some local fringe shows. Whatever it is you're working on, I can help.

College Counseling

I have worked as an SAT/ACT tutor for several years. For me, that job includes working with my client to figure out what colleges they would like to attend and what is required to get them into those colleges. I coach my clients through the college application process (including essay), as well as through any interview process that their school requires. Lastly, I help my clients navigate the various submission deadlines (AP scores, SAT/ACT scores, transcripts, financial aid, etc) so that nothing falls through the cracks.

Anthropology

I graduated from Rollins College Magna Cum Laude. I earned my degree in Anthropology with honors. While there I worked as a TA for the head of the Anthropology program.

Archaeology

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Rollins College. While there I earned a degree with honors in Archaeology. Additionally, I worked with a professor on his original research concerning the development of Swahili city states from the 12th to the 18th centuries.

Social Studies

I minored in social studies coursework while in college. The coursework included a range of topics from early history of the New World to modern politics. Many people see Social Studies as an impenetrable list of dates and names. My lessons are designed to show you the story behind everything so that my clients can engage with the material in a meaningful way.

Film

I have worked on set with Valencia Productions, Enchanted Forge, Blackhart Films, Panama City Beach Film Team, and Eric Heller Productions. I have worked both as talent and as crew on several film sets. I have directed my own projects and assisted others with whatever project they have set their sights on.
