The key to being successful in algebra 1 is to have a strong foundation. I will make sure to reinforce basic skills before moving on to more complex ones. I will breakdown each step and use color coding techniques to facilitate comprehension. I will provide you with plenty of hands-on exercises/examples, worksheets, and EOC review packets so that each concept 'sinks in.'
I am a fully certified teacher with 10+ years teaching and tutoring experience. My interest in American history began when I started my first year of college. My history professor's passion was truly contagious. He would often say: "make sure to learn history as to not repeat it." My love of learning continues and I share it with those I tutor including students of all levels and ages. The ones I have tutored simply wanted me to help them make sense of what they were learning and needed help with retention. I will teach you how to synthesize and paraphrase key information from your book using the Cornell note taking method and how to retain information using flashcards and drills.
We all know how frustrating it can be to not have the right word available in our existing lexicon or to be reading a newspaper, magazine or novel that we truly enjoy and run across a word whose meaning simply eludes us. Language is power. Building vocabulary provides a tool that we can use to meet our needs as a reader and a writer. Vocabulary is tested on standardized tests such as the PSAT, SAT, ACT, ASVAB, PERT, TEAS etc. Because remembering a whole list of words with their definitions is simply not effective, we will look at more effective techniques when deciphering new words such as breaking down the word into smaller parts and using context clues to determine meaning. We will also look at memorization techniques through games and word to picture associations. From the many techniques available, I will be sure to find the ones that suit your needs best!
Grammar is an important subject to comprehend and is featured on many tests such as the ACT, SAT, PSAT, ASVAB, TEAS, PERT, GED, etc. On standardized tests, you will be asked to identify and fix errors, and rely on your inner ear to fix phrases that seem fine for spoken English but not for formal written English. Grammar appears to be difficult to acquire, but it becomes easier with foundation concepts and a little focused practice. We will cover the following topics: types of sentences, punctuation, verb tenses, parts of speech, subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, homonyms, homophones, idioms, prefixes, suffixes, comparative and superlative modifiers. I have found that many students have a hard time with grammar because there are so many rules to remember. To help you master and remember those rules, you will complete grammar worksheets and review packets. Practice makes perfect!
French is my native language and my mother's tongue. I was born in Paris, France but was raised in the suburbs of Paris. I speak and write French fluently. I understand that French is a difficult language. Therefore, I focus instruction on reading, grammar, writing and speaking. They go hand in hand. Over the years, I have helped students of all grade levels and specialty programs such as IB (International Baccalaureate) and Cambridge AICE (Advanced International Certificate of Education). Please note: I offer homework support in French. This means that you must be currently enrolled in a French class to receive homework support.
I am pursuing a Master's degree in Mathematics Education. Math is my passion. I will cover foundational skills and break concepts down to facilitate comprehension. Are you struggling to understand what you are reading? I will help you make sense of the information you are reading by giving you the steps to achieve purposeful and active text comprehension. You will learn to visualize what you are reading, monitor your own comprehension using highlighting techniques, generate questions and answers by paraphrasing the text, recognize story structure and author's purpose, summarize each paragraph in your own words and use context clues to decipher vocabulary words. You will also learn to recognize key words in the questions to better find patterns and eliminate answer choices properly. I have experience tutoring elementary, middle school, high school and college students. I adapt my teaching to my students' grade level and standardized testing requirements. I can use reading, grammar, vocabulary, spelling worksheets to supplement instruction.
Spanish is my grandmother's tongue. I have an advanced level in the language. Over the years, I have helped students of all grade levels and specialty programs such as IB (International Baccalaureate) and Cambridge AICE (Advanced International Certificate of Education). Please note: I offer homework support in Spanish. This means that you must be currently enrolled in a Spanish class to receive homework support.
The SAT is an important test for college admission and remains a very coachable test for which students must prepare for. I have found that students who start preparing for this test early feel more comfortable with the test's structure and demands overtime. The Math section tests basic Algebra, Algebra 1 and 2 and geometry concepts. I will provide you with the foundation skills needed before moving on to more complex ones. The key to being successful is to practice, practice, practice. In a one-on-one setting, you will reinforce foundation skills using worksheets, you will practice test questions one at a time with guidance and on your own, complete homework, and learn test taking tips to maximize your score. I have extensive experience tutoring the new SAT Math with excellent results.
I am an experienced Florida certified teacher with 10+ years classroom and tutoring experience. As part of my International Baccalaureate (IB) program in Economics in France, I was required to read an extensive list of American and European authors. I truly enjoyed reading the novels of American authors John Steinbeck, Mark Twain, Harper Lee, Fannie Flagg, Ernest Hemingway, Herman Melville, Ray Bradbury and European authors William Shakespeare, Victor Hugo, Albert Camus, Gustave Flaubert, Guy De Maupassant, Moliere, Franz Kafka and Anne Frank to name a few. Although my experience is mainly with classics, I can also assist with contemporary literature. I would be happy to read novels with you, discuss, analyze and write about them critically.
Students who generally ask for proofreading help are high school students whom I am already tutoring in another subject and need some additional help with a college application essay or an International Baccalaureate (IB) paper; however, I would be happy to help new students as well. We would check for grammar, spelling, structure, and organization/ flow of ideas. On a few occasions, I have supplemented instruction with skill builder grammar worksheets to help my students improve their skills.
I am a certified teacher in the state of Florida with 10+ years experience helping students prepare for and pass the GED test. Students I tutor come from all walks of life with the goal of graduating high school, starting college, or advancing their career. I tutor all sections of the test: Reasoning Through Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Because of my elementary classroom experience, I approach each section in a detailed manner and offer strategies to tackle each set of questions efficiently. I found that students learn best when highlighting and color coding key information, taking notes (on paper and flashcards) and practicing extensively. I will not move on until I have explained each question thoroughly and until you understand fully the explanation. I can show you how to make the best use of the resources you provide and can supplement instruction using my own worksheets. You will complete past practice tests, skill builder worksheets in math and grammar and homework to review all sections.
The new SAT Reading has 2 sections: Critical Reading and Writing and Language. The Critical Reading section tests reading comprehension skills while the Writing and Language section tests words in context, grammar and editing (improving or deleting information) . I have found that the Critical Reading section can be challenging because students lose themselves in the details. I will help you extract what is important from the text and will provide strategies that will help you tackle the questions in an efficient way within the time constraint of the test. The Writing and Language section can also challenge you with difficult vocabulary words. Even though you might not know all the vocabulary words, we will work on techniques to recognize the many clues present within the sentence that will help you figure out the meaning of the words. We will also look at strategies to acquire and retain new vocabulary words. As well, you will complete grammar worksheets to strengthen your skills and you will learn how to effectively edit passages (improve/delete information) for better flow. In a one-on-one setting, you will tackle one question at a time with guidance and on your own, work on current and past practice tests and complete homework. I have extensive experience tutoring the new SAT Reading with excellent results.
The essay, although optional on the new SAT, helps identify strong candidates. It is a lot like a typical college writing assignment in which you will be asked to analyze a text. Together we will be looking at examples of essays that received a perfect score and discussing elements of a strong essay. We will cover the following topics: the 3-parts of an essay, content, topic sentences, transitions, style, tone, grammar and punctuation. You will also get the opportunity to write your own essay using the strategies taught during instruction. I have extensive experience tutoring the new SAT Writing with excellent results.

That is why it is important to prepare for this test ahead of time in order to obtain a high score. I will thoroughly prepare you for the PSAT. You will complete current & past practice tests, worksheets and homework. I tutor all sections of the test (reading / grammar/ math) and have done so with excellent results.
I am a fully certified teacher with over 10+ years of teaching and tutoring experience. I help my elementary, middle school and high school students/tutees make sense of both history and geography by helping them understand that all events are interconnected in a cause-effect relationship. Together, we will create flow charts, synthesize and paraphrase key information using the Cornell note taking method, use highlighting and color coding techniques to emphasize key points, colored flashcards and drills for retention, and incorporate videos -when appropriate- to visualize events.
Writing clearly and effectively is only possible if you have proper spelling. Today we tend to rely on the computer or phone to provide proper spelling; however, during a test you will not have these tools, and you will have to use your current knowledge of spelling rules to create a concise and clear essay. This is where I come in. Together we will work on common misspellings, spelling rules, prefixes, suffixes, irregular plurals and forming new words/verb tenses with new endings. I help elementary, middle school and high school students improve their spelling as well as their handwriting and reading skills.
The ACT Reading is probably the most challenging section of the test because of its time constraint. You will have to keep a fast pace while answering questions accurately. I will prepare you thoroughly. You will complete past practice tests and homework. I am an experienced teacher and tutor with over 10-years experience in and out of the classroom. Over the years, I have helped many students prepare successfully for the test.
Being successful on the English section of the ACT implies that you have mastered basic grammar and writing rules. You will be asked to analyze sentences, paragraphs and whole passages. I will simplify concepts, help you master basic grammar rules and teach you test taking strategies to maximize your score. You will complete questions from past practice tests, skill builder worksheets and homework to build your skills and confidence.
The key to being successful on the ACT Math is to practice, practice, practice. This is probably the most 'convenient' test as it allows for a calculator throughout. I will teach you how to ace the math section by breaking down every single concept for you, showing you patterns in the questions and teaching you time saving strategies. I will thoroughly prepare you. We will reinforce foundation skills using worksheets and we will work on current and past practice tests. I am well versed in teaching the ACT and have helped many students obtain scholarships.
I am an experienced teacher with 10+ years experience tutoring the ACT. Although the science section of the ACT seems intimidating, there is really nothing to be afraid of. In fact, the test is more of a test of scientific reasoning and analysis (graph interpretation) than a test of science content. The best way to prepare is to simply practice, practice and practice. Did I say practice? I will prepare you thoroughly. I will break every concept down one at a time. I will not move on until you fully understand the explanation. You will complete questions from past practice tests, take extensive notes and learn test taking strategies. I tutor all 4-sections of the ACT: reading, English, math, science. I can use the course material provided and supplement instruction with my own skill builder worksheets.
Math is my passion. I make it fun, and I break down every concept into smaller parts to facilitate comprehension. I will provide plenty of worksheets, review packets, and homework so that each concept 'sinks in.' Practice makes perfect!

My experience is with students who are low to mild on the spectrum and whose disorder is managed through low dose medication or behavioral therapy. By no means I claim to be an expert, but consider myself proficient in teaching techniques to assist students with such needs. I have found that one-on one tutoring is very effective in helping my ADHD students learn at their own pace where I follow a remedial and/or rigorous plan of study. My students learn by doing or by acting. They are in their seats or out of their seats; it does not matter as long as they are comfortably and safely learning. I follow the course material provided or my own that I supplement with worksheets for proficiency.

I primarily provide remedial tutoring and adopt multiple strategies to help my students learn. I break concepts down by using colorful highlighting techniques, have my students paraphrase orally and in writing what they are learning to ensure comprehension and allow for skill drilling for mastery. I can use the course material and/or provide my own worksheets to complement instruction.

I adopt a multisensory approach to instruction and use strategies that engage my students' hearing, sight and touch senses. I gently guide my students to autocorrect their own mistakes and provide assistance as needed. My students learn best with me, because I offer a calm and supportive environment. I successfully filed my own immigration paperwork -often the length of a novel- without assistance and prepared extensively for the US citizenship writing and oral test. Therefore, my work experience combined with my personal experiences of the process make me the ideal person to help you with your own journey.
With over 10+ years tutoring experience, I have worked with many homeschooled students over the years. The students I have the privilege to tutor are homeschooled due to medical, religious or personal reasons. I have found that the number one reason my students give for being homeschooled is that they simply want to learn comfortably at home in their pjs and at their own pace without outside human distractions (peer pressure or bullying). I adapt instruction to fit my students' needs. I can use the course material and lesson plans provided by the homeschooling institution your child attends and/or I can supplement instruction using my own worksheets as part of a remedial or a rigorous plan of study.
