Comprehensive History, Math, and English

I just graduated from Bellarmine University Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science. During my four years there I have tutored countless students both through Wyzant and independently. My experience is primarily in Mathematics, and I have tutored over many specialties for High School and College levels, especially Algebra and Calculus. I greatly enjoy giving others the opportunity to learn. I have spent countless hour... [more]

Algebra 1

I have an excellent understanding of mathematics and have taken honors courses in it since elementary school. I greatly enjoy the subject and I expressed that competitively in my high school's math and academic teams. I believe it is important for the student to understand mathematics, not just to memorize functions and figures; I would bring this attitude to the table, helping the student to understand how and why they are doing math in a certain way. I took Algebra 1 in 7th grade and received high marks. Algebra 1 is the backbone of many upper level math courses, and I will make sure the student succeeds in Algebra 1 so that they can succeed everywhere else.

Algebra 2

I have a good understanding of mathematics and have taken honors courses in it since elementary school. I was a member of my high school's math team and I study math in college. I believe that math should be taught so that the student understands the concept, and will make sure that any students that I tutor fully understand what they are studying.

American History

I have been interested in history from a young age and have always excelled in its coursework. I took AP World History and AP US history in high school and received a 5 on each test. I am skilled at writing research papers concerning history and can assist pupils with that. I believe that history should not be seen as a series of individual events but instead as a constantly evolving interconnected group of occurrences in history, and that the big picture is more important than memorizing names and dates (although those are important too!); I would use this attitude to assist students in their studies.

Calculus

I took AP Calculus AB in high school and received a 5 on the test. I received an A in Calculus 2 at Bellarmine University.I have a good understanding of mathematics and have taken honors courses in it since elementary school. I was a member of my high school's math team and I study math in college. I believe that math should be taught so that the student understands the concept, and will make sure that any students that I tutor fully understand what they are studying.

Vocabulary

I have an excellent understanding of the English Language, especially in the area of its vocabulary. I have a large vocabulary that is constantly growing and I would love to share my knowledge and my ability to derive the meaning of words with the student. Although memorization is important, in the area of vocabulary it is also important to be able to determine meaning from context and the parts of the word itself; I would bring this attitude to the table when tutoring the student in vocabulary.

Grammar

I have an excellent understanding of the English language and understand the intricacies of its grammar and usage. I have a deep knowledge of how the English language works and grammar is almost a second nature. Language is an intricate dance, and I can help the student dance it, elegantly stepping through a phrase, sentence, or paragraph to not only make it grammatically correct, but also a thing of beauty.

Microsoft Excel

I took a semester of computer applications in high school in which I studied the use of Microsoft office; I was at the top of my class. I have used Microsoft Office applications extensively in my academic career and I know how to navigate the intricacies of each program to create a sleek, nice looking document free of errors. Additionally, I can help pupils with organization and specific formatting styles.

European History

I have been interested in history from a young age and have always excelled in its coursework. I have taken two college courses concerning European History, one focusing on the years 1450 to 1870 and the other focusing on 1870 to the present; I received an A and an A- respectively.

Geometry

I have an excellent understanding of mathematics and have taken honors courses in it since elementary school. I greatly enjoy the subject and I expressed that competitively in my high school's math and academic teams. I believe it is important for the student to understand mathematics, not just to memorize functions and figures; I would bring this attitude to the table, helping the student to understand how and why they are doing math in a certain way. In the case of geometry I would help the student understand how to take shapes and apply their properties to all sorts of problems in order to make their work easier. I took an integrated course in geometry and algebra 2 my freshman year of high school and I performed extremely well.

Microsoft Word

I have used Microsoft Office applications extensively in my academic career and I know how to navigate the intricacies of each program to create a sleek, nice looking document free of errors. I can help the pupil utilize Microsoft Word in order to make their project-whether it be a paper, a resume, or something else-look as nice as possible.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I took a semester of computer applications in high school in which I studied the use of Microsoft office; I was at the top of my class. I have used Microsoft Office applications extensively in my academic career and I know how to navigate the intricacies of each program to create a sleek, nice looking document free of errors. I can help the pupil use PowerPoint in order to create a powerful, beautiful, informative presentation that will impress their superiors, peers, and coworkers.

Prealgebra

I took Prealgebra early-in the sixth grade-so it is ingrained into my studies as a subject that I have known intimately for most of my academic career; I did very well in the class and in subsequent Algebra classes.

Precalculus

I took Precalculus as a sophomore in high school and received an A in the class and a 100% grade on the final.

Reading

I have a knack for deriving meaning from the written work. I understand the intricacies of composition and how essays and paragraphs are arranged. I would be able to impart this understanding upon the pupil and help them to develop by their reading comprehension and their writing ability simultaneously.

Spanish

I studied Spanish in high school and was consistently at the top of my class. I received a 4 on the AP Spanish test. I am currently studying Spanish at Bellarmine University and I plan to study in Spain my Junior year (2015-2016). I have several friends from Spanish speaking countries that I communicate with online, and because of this I have achieved proficiency in the language. I believe that it is more important to understand the language than it is to simply memorize words and phrases, and I plan to bring this attitude to the table in my tutoring.

Writing

I have been told by several of my instructors that I have a natural talent for writing. I am skilled in both fiction and nonfiction, and I can assist students with their endeavors in either category. I understand the structure of essays and I can help students effectively build their arguments. Additionally, I have an excellent sense of the English language, so I can assist students with improving their grammar and vocabulary. I understand the intricacies that go into a piece of writing and I can help students understand them as well.

Statistics

Geography

Geography is the backbone of history and social studies. In order to understand how and why things occurred, you have to understand the layout of the world. I have a good spatial understanding of the world, especially of the layout of the countries in the Americas, Europe, and West and East Asia. I would help the pupil understand geography so that he or she can understand History and why things occurred as they did.

English

I have an excellent understanding of the English language and understand the intricacies of its grammar and usage. I also possess an extensive vocabulary that grows quickly. I would be able to help the student achieve a greater understanding of the English language and the grammar and vocabulary that accompanies it.

ESL/ESOL

I have no formal experience teaching ESL/ESOL; however, I have a lot of experience helping native speakers of Spanish and Korean to learn English and refine their vocabulary and grammar. I am a student at Bellarmine University completing a major in Foreign Languages and International Studies, and I plan to spend time after college teaching English as a foreign language. It is my passion to help others learn English.

Literature

I have read or understand many classic works and I possess an excellent understanding of symbolism and other literary devices. I am willing to engage the pupil in a discussion in order to gauge and develop their personal understanding of their work. Additionally, I am willing to read any required work in order to assist with the student's studies.

World History

I have been interested in history from a young age and have always excelled in its coursework. I took AP World History in high school and received a 5 on the test. I am skilled at writing research papers concerning history and can assist pupils with that. I believe that history should not be seen as a series of individual events but instead as a constantly evolving interconnected group of occurrences in history, and that the big picture is more important than memorizing names and dates (although those are important too!) so I would focus on the relationships between events over just knowing that the events happen. It is important to recognize the relevance of historical events in a context and how they affect each other, and I would use this attitude to assist students in their studies.

Probability

I have plenty of experience with stats and probability having taken a many courses in it in college while working towards my math degree. I also received a 9/10 on the actuarial probability exam, a professional exam that works towards certification as an actuary.

I will focus on making sure that the student is able to quickly and effectively read the passages and graphs so that he or she is able to effectively answer the questions.
