Experienced, licensed teacher specializing in reading and writing

I am passionate about students learning to read and write! These are important academic skills that can make the difference of success in school and life. I am a licensed teacher with a BA in English and a master's in education, both from The College of William and Mary. I also have been trained in the Wilson Reading system and have taught and tutored using it for the past 15 years. I have had the satisfaction of seeing many of my students pass the state SOL tests as well as their English ... [more]

Vocabulary

Reading

I have passed the Reading, English and Vocabulary qualification tests of proficiency expected by WyzAnt.

Writing

I have worked with a number of high school students to prepare them for the writing SOL. I have even been contacted to help several students who did not pass the Writing SOL and needed "remediation" before they re-took it. Working with students to help them improve their writing skills gives me a great deal of satisfaction.

English

I am qualified in English, reading, writing, and special education.

Phonics

Since I was trained in the Wilson Reading system, the basis is phonics. You build on sounds, put them together into syllables, build words that are readable for the students who could not read. I have a masters in special education from William and Mary and 15 years experience teaching and working with students who had to start at the "basics" with phonics.

Special Needs

I have a masters in special education from William and Mary and taught for 15 years in Newport News, Va. My experience with special education is primarily students with learning disabilities but have experience with those with emotional disabilities as well. Most of my experience is with high school students but my license is K-12, special education and I have had some experience with all ages throughout my career.

Dyslexia

I have a masters in special education from William and Mary and taught in Newport News as a special educator for 15 years. I am trained in Wilson Reading which was actually created by Barbara Wilson based on Orton Gillingham strategies for use with people who were dyslexic. The first student I worked with was dyslexic and the Wilson Reading program was the key that unlocked his ability to read. He graduated from high school, college and has just been hired as an elementary school teacher! I get results.
