I am a practicing attorney, and at this point in my career, I want to help others to appreciate and realize what a good education can do for you. I have a bachelor of arts in political science. I graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1983, Magna Cum Laude. In addition to my major courses in political science, I took quite a few courses in literature. I believe that reading well is the starting point in any and all educational endeavors. We must be able to read and understand s... [more]
American history was always one of my favorite subjects in school. Even as a lawyer, I often have to know U.S. history when researching for various briefs I must write. The Constitution, the supreme law of the land, has much to do with our nation's history so we can put it into historical context.
Improving one's vocabulary will carry a person a long way in their future endeavors. My philosophy in vocabulary building is not to use "big words" for the sake of looking intelligent. Rather, and much more importantly, it is to help understand what others say or write and to give the student the ability to express himself or herself more precisely and concisely. I will help the student in these important endeavors by explaining word usage and encouraging the student to use new and contextually correct words and phrases.
Reading is at the heart of what I do for a living as a lawyer. I often teach clients how to read such things as complicated contracts. I can also teach reading skills to students. At least as important, I will do my best to inspire my students to love the written word and eagerly to seek new material to read.
The written word is often the primary way we have to communicate with others. As a practicing attorney, I have seen first hand what happens when what is written is not properly understood. When I tutor on writing, I emphasize making what is written understandable. That is the key: write in such a way that someone not involved can understand what is in writing. I work with my students until they understand how to write in a way that is understandable. It is not the quantity of what is written, but the quality. I settle for nothing less than quality writing.
English is a wonderful language which allows its speakers to express themselves, including their deepest thoughts in a way so the hearer or reader can understand and appreciate what is being said or written. However, our language can be difficult because there are so many exceptions to the rules of grammar. My approach to tutoring English is to help the student in two ways. First, to understand what the speaker or writer is trying to convey. Second, is to help the student learn to express himself or herself in a way that the hearer or reader can understand. I will spend as much time as necessary to help the student to achieve these twin goals and we can have fun doing it together.
Government & Politics
I have a BA in political science and a law degree. Government and politics are second nature to me. I can teach the underlying philosophy of the various types of government as well as the electoral process of both our nation and our state. My teaching method is to make government and politics understandable and enjoyable. In a country like the United States, knowing these subjects is essential for a functioning republic (I don't mean the Republican Party, but the actual form of our government). Contrary to what many people say, ours is not a democracy as that word is correctly defined.
I have been a practicing lawyer since November, 1986, when I became a member of the South Carolina Bar. I graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law that same year. My practice over these past almost 30 years has been diverse, everything from multi-million dollar personal injury cases involving toxic substances to business law to contracts to family law and much more over my long career. Do not hesitate to call on me if you need tutoring in any area of the law.
I think the GED is a wonderful way to help you succeed and I congratulate you on working toward achieving that goal. I have both a bachelor's degree (Political Science) and a law degree (Juris Doctor) and so have a lot of education under my belt. We will sit down together and come up with a plan that will help you the most. I will then work with you to help you be prepared for the test.
I have a degree from the University of South Carolina in Political Science. I graduated from USC Magna Cum Laude in Policital Science. I am also a practicing lawyer. A good lawyer knows about Social Studies in order to perform his/her duties as a lawyer. I am particularly adept in knowing how the government works according to the constitution of the United States and the State of South Carolina. While a law student, I assisted a Professor of Law research his book on various aspects of the Constitution of South Carolina. I am well versed in such studies.
I majored in Political Science at the University of South Carolina where I graduated in 1983 with a degree in Political Science, Magna Cum Laude. In addition to my university studies, I have always been very interested in the Political process. I follow each election carefully and try to analyze the election process from the standpoint of what the different candidates say and do. Political Science is my first love. I felt that I should learn it before I pursued my law degree.
