NASA Math/Physics Tutor - 20 Years Experience

Hello! Nice to meet you! Things you need to know about me: I have a passion for learning about the world around me, and I absolutely love to help others gain a similar understanding and fan that spark which lives in all of us. I have a B.S. in mathematics from UH-Clear Lake, and after six years at a government agency and the last three years as an actuary with a major accounting firm, I have recently decided to return to Texas in order to attend graduate school for a PhD in Physics. I am... [more]

Algebra 1

I have taught math and physics in some form or fashion for over 20 years, and worked at NASA for 6. Currently teaching at the college level as well as working on federal research grant for advanced propulsion in conjunction with Cal State Fullerton. I specialize in connecting with students' individual needs and adjusting the material to their learning style.

Algebra 2

Tutored for two years at San Jac. Math Lab, tutored privately for twenty years since. Also spent six years at Nasa and three at KPMG where I used math extensively.

ACT Reading

I have been programming computers since I was 11 years old; my mother majored in computer science and taught a class at my elementary school in basic programming in addition to giving me extensive one-on-one tutoring. I then went on to major in mathematics, focusing heavily on computer science, and utilized my skills at both NASA and KPMG. I taught myself MATLAB in three weeks for a project at NASA, have programmed extensively in Excel VBA as well as utilizing Pascal, C++, Oracle, SAS, etc., and can learn new languages with relative ease.

ACT Math

I have taught math and physics in some form or fashion for over 20 years, specializing in the new SAT and ACT prep for the last 3. Currently teaching at the college level as well as working on federal research grant for advanced propulsion in conjunction with Cal State Fullerton. ACT Science

Actuarial Science

I spent 3 years as an actuary for KPMG before deciding that I would prefer to come back to the NASA community, serving both in the Life office and in Data Analytics/Predictive Modeling under Property and Casualty and making it through four exams. I have traveled extensively as an actuarial consultant, working with many large, household clients, and have considerable tutoring experience in the math fields required even outside of actuarial science, so it is relatively simple to combine the two. I am still in contact with many of my colleagues as well, so while I suspect the bulk of WyzAnt students will just be requesting assistance with the preliminary exams, any advanced questions I receive I can answer by pulling in additional expert help.

Logic

I have enjoyed logic puzzles since I was eight years old; the highest grade I have ever received in a college class was 107 in logic, having not missed a single point all semester. On the debate team I won every debate I was on. I then went on to major in math, winning a scholarship from the National Science Foundation and publishing undergraduate research in the Journal of Algebra focused on the logical connections between upper triangular matrices and lattice-ordered algebras. I then went on to spend six years at NASA, singlehandedly designing software to consolidate and automate the tracking and manifesting of consumables for the crew of the International Space Station, winning multiple awards. Logic was obviously heavily involved in every one of these activities.
