I have always loved to learn and to help students achieve their goals. For more than 20 years, I taught immunology, microbiology, molecular and cellular biology, and biochemistry to medical and graduate students as a professor and research scientist in a medical school. My graduate students have honored me with an award for Teaching Excellence, and my colleagues have selected me for induction into the Academy of Master Teachers at my university. I was also given the title of Distinguished Tea... [more]

Zoology

I have studied zoology at the University of Bern in Switzerland from 1974 to 1978, and subsequently received a Master's degree from the same university in 1980 for a thesis investigating hormonal regulation of insect development. During my studies, I have also worked on research projects in vertebrate biology, physiology, and animal behavior. In addition, as a student assistant, I instructed medical students in embryology and histology. My tutoring methods relating to zoology emphasize an understanding of the phylogenetic relationships between different animal phyla, and of the functional relationships between different body plans and the ecological niche inhabited by a species.

MCAT

I worked for 21 years as a biomedical research scientist and Professor at a Texas Medical School . During this time, I interviewed about 20 medical school applicants per year. These evaluations included reviewing the candidates MCAT performance. I also directed basic science courses in the medical school, which required generating exam questions with clinical scenarios. I have advised many students on the MCAT, and am very familiar with the requirements and the format of the MCAT.

College Counseling

I worked for 21 years as a professor at a biomedical graduate and medical school. For six years, I was the program director for the largest graduate program at my university, and reviewed between 60 and 100 application per year. I am very familiar with the requirements for personal essays and what should be included in such essays to make an impression on the admission committee members. I have also advised many students on their admissions packets for graduate school.

Biostatistics

As a professional scientist in biomedical research, I have 30 years of experience applying statistical methods to data analysis. I have published biomedical research articles and described the statistical methods that we used in my laboratory. As a former professor and graduate program director, I have also designed and taught graduate classes on research design, including the use of statistical methods in biomedical research, and have advised students on an individual basis on the proper selection and use of statistics in their research projects. In particular, I have published research papers utilizing large scale bio statistical analysis on gene expression changes induced by environmental toxicants.

Genetics

As a professional research scientist, I have 30 years of experience in several biomedical fields including genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, and bioinformatics. I have published biomedical research articles on gene transfer, transgenic organisms, and gene expression based on work performed in my laboratory. As a former professor and graduate program director, I have also given lectures and organized small group literature discussions on topics in genetics for graduate and medical students.

Organic Chemistry

I have studied zoology with a minor in chemistry and physics at the University of Bern in Switzerland from 1974 to 1978, and subsequently received a Master's degree from the same university in 1980 for a thesis investigating hormonal regulation of insect development. Both my undergraduate studies and Master's thesis research required organic chemistry, and understanding of chemical structures. Insect development is regulated by sesquiterpenoids and steroidal hormones, highly complex organic chemical compounds. During my PhD dissertation research, I investigated the biochemistry of insect hormone and transport protein receptors, again requiring organic chemistry to synthesize and isolate compounds that could bind to these receptors as agonists or antagonists. My tutoring methods relating to organic chemistry emphasize an understanding of the structural relationships between compounds and the basis of chemical reactions. I focus on promoting understanding of basic principles and thus coach the students to develop independent thinking and acquire the understanding that will allow them to solve new problems.
