Elementary Math

Elementary (K-6th)

I have my ELA certification from City College of New York, having been taken multiple courses in early childhood, and primary education. I taught 5th & 6th grade English for two years, before going to middle and high schools. I also have extensive one-on-one tutoring experience with young learners, having worked with 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th graders to help them with elementary level English, math, social studies, and study skills. I am also extremely knowledgable about children's literature (my mother was a school librarian). I have also helped to compose and design curriculum for elementary level charter schools, focusing on subjects like ELA, elementary science, math and social studies, religious studies (this was for a local synagogue) and English for non-native speakers. (The ELL curriculum was for a City of New York initiative for children from immigrant families.) I believe that all of these experiences show that I am qualified to tutor in elementary subjects.

Study Skills

I believe that my personal credentials show that I am skilled in study skills. I am a certified 7-12 ELA Teacher, having worked in public, charter, and private schools here in NYC. I have my undergraduate degree from Cornell University, a Masters in Writing from Columbia, and my certification from City College. Additionally, I'm also a published author who works in multiple theaters here in NYC. As a teacher, and as a student myself, I understand and can teach the necessities of prioritizing tasks, setting goals, and the importance of keeping an organized and clean work space. I can help your child organize their assignments by difficulty, work level, and interest, so that boredom is never an obstacle that has to be overcome. I stress taking regular breaks, and incorporating physical activity in the work day (this is especially important for younger children). The key thing about study skills is that not every tactic works for every student. Some students thrive in quiet environments - others need a white noise of music to tune out in order to concentrate. This is the most important thing to take into account when helping a learner with his or her study skills - you have to find out what works for *that* student, and not what works for yourself.

Theater

I have a great deal of theatrical experience. My Bachelors is in Theater and Film from Cornell University. I have an MFA in playwriting from Columbia University's graduate theater department. I've been published in theatrical journals and periodicals multiple times, have written, directed, and acted in multiple plays and theater festivals in New York City. My work has been seen at Second Stage, the Bowery Poetry Club, The Flea, Under St. Marks, Ensemble Studios Theater, and The Actor's Studio. I'm well-versed in theater techniques, theater history, mainstream and avant-garde theater, directing, playwriting, and acting techniques.

Regents

As a High School ELA teacher, I helped multiple students prepare for the high school English, Global, and American History regents. I regularly worked with students to prepare them for the skills and content of all three regents, helping them with literacy skills, close reading skills, inference and main idea skills, all aligned with the Common Core. Additionally, I provide multiple review help for students with Global and American history content, making sure that students understood context, sequence, and how major historical events influenced and reflect upon current events.

Film

I have a degree in Theater & Film from Cornell University, where I studied the works of Michael Snow, Goddard, and Antonioni. I also have a degree in Dramatic Writing from Columbia University, where I studied playwriting and screenwriting, and studied under such renowned filmmakers as Frank Pugliese, Ang Lee, Nicole Burdette and Lewis Cole. I've written for and directed multiple short films, having won the B.E.A. short screenplay award, Faculty Selects Best screenplay, and I've been a finalist for the Sundance Screenwriter's lab two times.
