Let Me Help You Succeed

Empathy with you, my student, is paramount. I make it clear from the beginning that I care for you, that I want you to master whatever we are studying together, that I will work hard to find and use your best paths to knowledge. A bit of subject-matter-related humour often helps. I have high expectations when I work as a tutor but I will never make my students suffer. I am an intellectually curious person; I play to whatever degree of intellectual curiosity I find in students. I aim to m... [more]

French

French is one the great passions of my life. I've nurtured it for decades through reading, through membership in French-language discussion groups, through friendship with French-speakers here in Rochester, through films, and most especially though travel in France, and through close friendships with French friends living there. I am also a trained teacher and tutor. Since I have studied Russian and German as well as French, I have a clear idea what is involved in learning another language.

Reading

I've worked as a reading tutor primarily with children in 3rd through 6th grades. Often they command the mechanics of reading (breaking unfamiliar words into syllables, decoding difficult spellings, and so forth) and yet have trouble comprehending what they read. I have found that this dichotomy is the greatest (and most interesting) challenge in helping them to master reading.

Writing

I have lots of general qualifications as a writer: a score of 800 on the SAT advanced test in writing; a career of highly praised papers in high school and college; a stint as writer for a weekly newspaper. But I think that my best qualification in this instance is the work I did with my elementary ESOL students in Hilton, from coaching their very first writing efforts in first grade journals through third grade papers on a favorite animal, to book reports in fifth and sixth grade.

Geography

English

My English qualifications come, above all, from the excellent education I received in prep school. We read challenging books. We wrote about them. By my junior year I was obliged to produce three compositions a week. My papers earned A's. When I took the SAT Writing Exam I scored an 800, which is the highest score possible. As an ESOL teacher, I have been devoted to mastery of reading and writing in English.

ESL/ESOL

I am currently teaching a multi-level class for English-learners from a dozen different language backgrounds. My professional background: I have taught ESOL at all public school grade levels (kindergarten through high school), in college, in factories, in migrant farm-worker camps, in adult language programs here and in Russia. Some of my work has been with full classes, but much has been one-on-one in a tutoring relationship. Along the way I have picked up many different ways to approach the challenge of learning a new language, which I want to share with people who face this challenge.

Government & Politics

World History

I have a big knowledge base in World History. I have taken courses in United States History, Modern European History, Early European History, Russian History, Ancient Japanese and Chinese History, the history of Pre-Columbian peoples, Ancient Greeek and Roman History, History of the Indian Subcontinent I have experience tutoring highschool students for an AP exam

Proofreading

GED

I believe that my solid preparation to be a TASC tutor is three-fold: (a) I paid serious attention to, and did well in, all of my subjects in highschool; (b) I am a certified and experienced teacher who worked on both English and math with my English as a Second Language students; (c) I have already tutored both younger and older people in their preparation for this test.

Art History

Russian

I started learning Russian in the last two years of high school. Russian was my major in college. I spent 2 months of language practice in the old soviet union. I have recently lived in Rochester, NY's sister city, Novgorod, where I was immersed in the language. My pronunciation is excellent; my command of grammar is broad.

Social Studies

I am WyzAnt qualified to tutor in world history, American history, and European history. I would also be qualified to tutor someone in social studies. Besides being an excellent student in this area when I was in school myself, I coached many middle-school and high-school students in their social studies work when I was an ESOL teacher in public school systems. I have a Bachelor's degree from Amherst College/SUNY Geneseo in Art History and Russian Studies, and a University of Rochester Master's Degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I also have a New York State Permanent teaching certificate.
