I have a BA in Classical Guitar performance from St. Mary's College of Maryland, and I also studied jazz independently with Charlie Byrd. I received my MFA from California Institute of the Arts where I also studied music of India, Africa and the Balkans, with Ustad Aashish Khan and Miroslav Tadic, as well as further studies of jazz and composition with Larry Koonse and Vinnie Golia. I am familiar with very advanced rhythmic, melodic and harmonic concepts, scales and patterns, both in improvisational and written settings.
In addition to having had to take ear training in college and graduate school, I have very advanced training in Indian Classical music, which uses significantly more scales than western music, as well as microtones. I have also transcribed jazz solos, african music, rock music and more.

I have been singing in bands for 20 years, and have learned to sing much more deeply as a result of learning Indian Classical Music, which is primarily taught by singing even to instrumentalists. I can sing many unusual scales (and rhythms) and have about a 3 octave range (including falsetto).
