I studied French for six years in junior high and high school. We learned the language via something called the audio-lingual method, which involved listening to native speakers on tapes in a lab and repeating what they said several times. We would learn dialogues that I still remember well many years later. I believe this helped me acquire an accent that has earned compliments even in France! Beyond high school, I took several college courses in French literature in which we studied texts of plays and novels in French. I've been to France several times and love to practice my French with shopkeepers and fruit vendors. I continue to keep up my skills in a bi-monthly conversation class. I enjoy sharing my love of French and France with others, particularly students who want to improve their skills in this language!

I've taught ESL at the South Bay Adult School in Redondo Beach and am currently listed as a sub at this school. I also tutor individual ESL students on a variety of skills, including writing, reading, speaking and listening. I've worked with students from many countries and with a wide disparity of skills, from beginning to advanced. I have a BA in English, along with more than a year of graduate work in teaching ESL. As the daughter of immigrant parents, I have an understanding of the particular challenges that speakers of other languages face in learning to speak, read and write English. CBEST

As a certified adult education teacher in California, I took and passed the CBEST. I have also tutored students using downloaded samples of the reading, writing and math portions of the test. In addition to my specific experience tutoring students who are preparing to take the CBEST, my background as a high school independent studies teacher has been excellent preparation to work with this population. In the two programs in which I was employed, I worked one-on-one with students studying to complete coursework in English and math, along with a variety of other required high school classes and electives. Much of the required curricula of the English and math courses included homework and tests that were similar to the content of the CBEST exams. Before becoming an independent studies teacher, I worked for many years as a journalist, so my ability to help my students with writing is rooted in my personal experience as a reporter and editor.


Praxis

Handwriting

Teaching handwriting, whether printing or cursive, requires a great deal of patience and practice. There are many online and printed resources that are useful in helping students to accomplish this. Among my favorites are the "Handwriting Without Tears" workbooks, which are geared to children in kindergarten through 4th grade, guiding them from early introduction to writing letters and numbers to cursive practice in later years. I've also adapted a variety of online and printed resources to help students learn or improve their handwriting. As an independent tutor and as an independent study teacher in Santa Monica and in Redondo Beach, CA, I have worked with students, from elementary-age to adult, to improve their ability to print or write in cursive. Not everyone believes that printing and cursive need to be taught these days, and some people suggest that computers and other digital devices have made handwriting obsolete. However, I feel that these are skills that are essential in many situations, such as test-taking and essay writing. Learning how to print and write cursive skillfully and legibly can only help students in future endeavors, and I feel I'm well prepared to help students of all ages accomplish this.


Common Core

I was an instructional aide in several remedial English classes at Santa Monica College during the 2013-14 school year in which materials and teaching methods were based on Common Core principles. The aim was to help students use research- and evidence-based methods during class discussions, writing and test-taking. Unlike other teaching situations that I've observed in the past, this program aimed to engage students in thinking, talking and writing about situations that impacted them personally or that they had observed in the workplace or in the larger world. The classes were specifically designed with Common Core principles in mind. I continue to sub in a high school diploma program that includes tutoring in all high school subjects--including English, math, history and science--where Common Core standards are used. Previous high school texts are being updated in this program to reflect the new standards.
