I have a Washington state continuing certificate and am endorsed to teach any subject K-8. I taught 6th grades students math, science, and p.e. for 7 years. I also have taken college education classes in childhood reading and writing development. I am currently tutoring 4 students in reading, writing, and math who are all in public elementary schools.

Phonics

I have taught reading incorporating phonetics for more than 10 years in a public school setting. Part of my B.A. in education involved learning methodology of teaching phonetics. I regularly incorporate phonics during tutoring sessions that involve learning how to read.

Study Skills

I taught study skills as a classroom subject for 20 years to students of all ages and abilities within a public school setting. I have organized lessons and materials in order to support outside curriculum for those classes. I have taught and modeled study skills in some form in every tutoring lesson I have led for over 8 years.

Special Needs

I earned a B.A. in special education from Central Washington University in 1992. I have been endorsed by the state of Washington to teach special education classes in grades K-12 since 1993. I have taught special needs students of all ages in various settings both in public school and during tutoring sessions.

ADHD

I hold a bachelors degree in special education. I taught many students with ADD/ADHD in both special education classrooms and regular education classrooms. I am currently tutoring two students with ADD/ADHD and have kept current on the literature regarding these disorders.

Dyslexia

I hold a bachelor's degree in special education. I taught many students with dyslexia in both special education classrooms and regular education classrooms. I am currently tutoring two students with dyslexia and have kept current on the literature regarding this disorder and methods to better help students with dyslexia.

Sociology

I graduated with a B.A. major in sociology from Western Washington University in 1989. I have been endorsed by the state of Washington to teach high school level sociology and related classes since 1993. I have taught several high school level sociology classes.

Finite Math

I have received credit for a college level finite math classes such as probability and statistics. I have taught mathematical model building, matrix algebra, linear programming, probability, and statistics at the high school level. I have tutored college level students in all of these areas as well.

Handwriting

I have tutored various 5 - 9 year old students in handwriting using the "Handwriting Without Tears" curriculum. I used similar curriculum with special needs students with fine motor skill deficits in public schools. I have kept current on literature (articles) concerning the methodology of handwriting and its importance in today's society.

Common Core

I taught math and science classes in a public high school in Washington state when common core standards were first adopted in 2009. I have aligned curriculum designed for teaching common core standards in math and science. I have formatively assessed students in the classroom using common core standards and have proctored both elementary and high school state tests. I have collaborated with other certified teachers in order to align curriculum with Washington state common core standards.
