I have been tutoring in the Pittsfield and Williamstown public schools for over 8 years, often with Special Education students who have Individualized Education Plans (IEP). A large part of my work with all students is helping them develop study strategies to complete homework assignments and prepare for tests. These include strategies for note taking in class and while reading, organizing subject material by importance or difficulty, identifying key ideas and preparing summaries, and managing time and distractions. It also includes motivating students to value and enjoy learning.
I hold an Associates Degree in Applied Science (A.A.S. - Forest Technology) from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. I have worked as a Forest Technician for the U.S. Forest Service in Utah and Washington State (Uintah National Forest, Olympic National Forest), the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (as an assistant ranger in the Adirondack Mountain Preserve) and for a private forester in Vermont. I maintain an extensive plant identification database.
I have been a jazz trumpet player for 40 years including several years each playing with the Williams College Big Band, Berkshire Community College Jazz Ensemble and The Good Life, a 5-piece jazz band performing for concerts and outdoor performances, weddings and family events, restaurants, resorts and country clubs, business and school events, and town and community celebrations in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. I have been recorded on The BCC Jazz Ensemble Plays Music by Thelonius Monk. I am comfortable offering both instrumental trumpet and jazz theory lessons.
I have over ten years of experience providing employment and career counseling for youths, young adults and adults at Stanley Isaacs Center and Covenant House in New York City and the Family Life Support Center in Massachusetts. I developed and organized employment counseling and job referral programs, counseled and assisted clients with job search activities and education planning, recruited, trained and supervised counseling staff, developed and maintained business and community employment and training contacts, and designed interviewing and employability skills training programs.
