My primary teaching experience combined with my reading specialist degree program have given me hours of practice in spelling instruction. I have a variety of assessments to asses student learning levels, and use a well-known core curriculum with supplements to provide explicit and engaging spelling instruction. It is my philosophy that spelling instruction be personalized and individualized for all students to create authentic learning experiences.
I am currently enrolled in DePaul's Literacy and Specialized Instruction program, with a focus on reading specialty. Within this program, I am assessing student's literacy knowledge, with a strong emphasis on their phonetic skills and abilities. My coursework and practical application focus specifically on analyzing phonics abilities of clients. Apart from this, I have taught for 3 years in a K-2 classroom, where phonics instruction is a critical component of my literacy instruction.
Hard of Hearing
Prior to moving to Chicago, I worked as a Deaf and Hard of Hearing educator in Boston. I am fluent in SEE II (a type of sign language) and conversational in American Sign Language. I have a minor in Deaf and Hard of Hearing studies from my undergraduate institution.
I have ample experience in handwriting practice as I have taught in a K-2 setting for the past three years. During this time, I have taught a variety of handwriting programs, including Handwriting Without Tears, and handwriting programs associated with literature curriculum. I also have a variety of technological resources at hand to assist with handwriting practice.
