I have worked with and tutored many students, generally ages 10 and up with some college, for nine years, specializing in individuals with special needs (specifically ADD/ADHD and Autism). My specialties in tutoring are: English (all grades and college), public speaking/presentations, study habits and test preparation, Keystone/SAT prep, particularly writing and English comprehension; other subjects can be touched upon as well. I am an English/Writing major at Edinboro University. I am also a contributing writer for our campus newspaper, The Spectator, as well as contributing editor for our literary journal, Chimera. Examples available upon request.
During my senior year of high school I assisted with our SAT Prep class for sophomores. I also currently work with Autistic kids in developing effective study habits. I have always made a point to focus on active reading, listening, and note taking skills, as well as general ways to remain calm and level headed during tests. In previous tutoring jobs another main focus was time management.
In addition to being very actively involved on and off stage with drama club throughout high school, I also currently work with my former high school on their productions. There are many valuable skills I have picked up between performing and watching/coaching others. As with public speaking, it all begins with confidence in one's self and that is where the interactive exercises begin.
I spent three years in high school with a peer mentoring program for special needs children in our school district. The five boys I was charged with were between the ages of nine and twelve, and all had ADD/ADHD, Autism, and/or other mental disorders (depression, bipolar, etc.). My responsibilities were to tutor them in problematic school subjects, assist them in developing proper study and social skills, and providing a good role model they could trust and look up to. I also currently work at a school for Autistic children and hold similar responsibilities.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
I worked as a classroom/personal care aide for children and young adults with Autism, ranging between the ages of 6 and 21. I have past experience with high and low spectrum and adults. I was responsible for tutoring, assisting with daily activities, and supervising/assisting the students as needed. I am very used to connecting with them on whatever level works and find Autism to be a unique view on life.
My high school had a tutoring program for the elementary school and special needs classes in which we had to practice handwriting with the students. I participated in this program for three years. We used worksheets and interactive activities to assist them in learning both the alphabet and legible penmanship.
