Hello! I'm New York City born and raised. I graduated from the University of Chicago last year with a degree in East Asian Languages and Civilizations. I returned to New York last year from living in Taiwan to shift my career focus towards education. I have since moved to Philadelphia and am taking on students in the area. I spent seven years of grade school learning French, culminating in an advanced literary French class. I am familiar with spoken and written French, and a variety of textbooks and teaching methods. I believe it's important for a student to get a deep familiarity with the complexity of French grammar before advancing to any other point. I spent two and a half years tutoring two middle schoolers from France in biblical studies, and some of our lessons were conducted completely in French.
I know around 2000 Japanese kanji, including rare and obscure ones. I have spent time studying abroad, including a homestay immersion program in Kyoto during high school. I completed the entire 4 year modern Japanese course of study at the University of Chicago in 3 years.
I know more than the 2,000 characters required for proficiency in reading and writing simplified and traditional character sets, a total of about 5,000 characters. I have spent extensive time in both mainland China and Taiwan, including a 10-week total immersion program in Beijing. I spent four months in Taipei working as a representative between an American business and the Taiwanese government. While I was in Taiwan, I had a part-time job tutoring Mandarin to foreign students from English-speaking countries, and utilized the Integrated Chinese textbook series. One of my hobbies is translating classical and modern Chinese poetry into English.
From 6th to 12th grade I worked as a volunteer at a School in the computer lab, helping children grades K-5 learn through computer programs. I also was responsible for other administrative duties requiring proficiency with Mac computers, including server management. I know how to use all productivity software for the Mac (including Microsoft Office for mac), Macintosh media suite (iTunes, photos, iWork). All the programming experience I've accrued (HTML/CSS, Scheme) has been done using Macs.
