An obvious benefit of tutoring both English and English Comp for five years is a strong vocabulary. Teaching vocabulary is a major part of teaching writing. I encourage my writing students to turn off any computer spell-check features, and rely on either an online or hard cover dictionary until they have completed a first draft of an assignment. This method ensures that students will not only choose words that strengthen their sentences, but can add those words to their vocabulary.
