I currently am not teaching in a school setting; I work as a Senior Habilitation provider for children and young adults with developmental disabilities. Outside of my job, I tutor children from preschool to young adults in college from 3-10 hours per week and have been doing so for over 11 years. My bachelor's is in Human Services, master's in Special Education and a certificate in Positive Behavior Support. Both degrees and the certificate program taught me things that are helpful in my ever... [more]
I have helped many students in the subject of writing and in all grades. I am currently assisting 2 college students with their writing and they are both doing well. I am familiar with APA and MLA forms of writing as well as annotated bibliographies, journaling, research and writing summaries. I feel that it is important to teach students how to write in the proper tense, use a dictionary and thesaurus so that their work is unique and has a voice.
My educational background with study skills began in my own school days. I try to teach study skills according to the students' needs-flashcards, note-taking (Cornell is one of the best ways), highlighting keys words, phrases or sentences (if allowed), using other resources to gain a better understanding of the material. I also encourage them to ask questions and have study partners if possible.
For over 16 years I have been providing private therapy and academic services to children/young adults with special needs/developmental disabilities. I have a bachelor's in Human Services, a master's in Special Education and a certificate in Positive Behavior Support. I have clients with many different disabilities and needs. Some of my clients and I have worked together for over 10 years. I specialize in Autism and other disabilities on the spectrum. Also, I work with children with Down's Syndrome, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Williams Syndrome, Velo-Cardio Facial Syndrome and more. I provide private habilitation and respite services.
Although I have currently been in the same job for over 17 years, I have worked in several different fields and have the knowledge base to tutor people in various career fields. Also, I have been a youth minister and mentor for teens for over 20 years; as part of my duties, I have assisted them in looking and applying for jobs. The special needs clients I work with eventually all go through Vocational Rehab and I am always a part of that process with them. I have helped to develop several training programs.

Social studies is one of my favorite subjects. In high school and college I took the basic Social Studies and history classes as well as elective ones so that I could keep learning about the subject. I have had many opportunities over the years to be a part of various grade levels and their social studies programs; from 3rd grade to freshman/sophomores in college. Teachers have put me in charge of small groups as well as individual students to help them in their understanding of social studies.
Handwriting is one of the most important areas of study for students. I make sure to take the time to encourage the students I work with to do the best they can and give them hints on how to form their writing so it looks nice. I have worked for many years with assisting students with the pincer grasp and various writing tools to help them improve.
