The results I've had tutoring both young and older students have been phenomenal, and I say that with humility. I've seen elementary students' grade-level equivalent in reading and math jump from 4th to 8th in a two-week period of daily instruction. Even more importantly, they become calmer, more focused, more at ease, more interested in the subject, and kinder. This is not magic! The topic I chose for my M.Ed. was a study of the relative success of advanced-track students and lower-achieving students (now called special needs) in middle school. When I taught high school in NYC, I spent a full year teaching classes of special needs students with no assistant. More recently, I taught ICT/CCT classes, again single-handedly for the first semester. Last year I tutored a 5th grade special needs student who had big problems with math, and she came to not only like it, but to excel at it. I've worked with and been dedicated to helping special needs students throughout my career, and I've had excellent results.
My first degree was in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Oxford, UK. My Masters was in Social Studies Education from City College of New York. I taught social studies for more than twenty years with the NYC Department of Education, from 7th grade to 12th grade. I also taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grade social studies for several years at private and parochial schools in NYC.
