My experience as an elementary teacher has allowed me to work with students at all levels in their reading. I have experience teaching phonics and whole language and was a reading specialist in grades 4 and 5.

Over 15 years of teaching primary grade students with an emphasis on phonics, specifically Saxon phonics, has given me a sound foundation to teach spelling. My method is to integrate spelling with reading and writing when working with students.

My experience with teaching phonics as a foundation is sound. I have over 15 years of primary teaching experience with using programs such as Saxon phonics. Some of my experience includes teaching second language learners these foundations to help them learn to read in English. A clear understanding of letter/ sound relationships , vowel sounds and blends is what I can offer students in a way to remediate and/or help them progress in reading.

Study Skills

I took a Masters level course on the Read/ Write Connection when I was teaching. This course outlined creative ways to teach expository and response writing as well as study skills, vocabulary builders and complex sentence structure. I would love to teach in this area and use what I learned.

Being a former primary teacher, I have taught beginning handwriting skills including stroke and sequence of letter formation in Kindergarten and later spacing and proximity when beginning to write sentences. Additionally, I have taught cursive to 3rd grade students.
